Miserable day today so lit the stove and stayed put. Weather permitting will go to Leek tomorrow as I am running low on provisions. Will also find out tomorrow if Sam can make it up on Saturday and that will largely determine what we do next, although I wouldn't mind trying to get through Froghall tunnel. Did go for a walk and took a few photos. I have entitled this one "Bloody Polish steam locomotives, coming over here and stealing all our passengers".

Went to the end of the Leek Arm today. This is it. Straight ahead is the feeder, to the right the canal used to continue more or less on the middle of leek but it was filled in long ago and has a 1960s style industrial estate built on it now. In hindsight, given the popularity of canals and Leek aiming more towards tourism, I imagine they must regret this. I've seen a few of these next to the Caldon, rectangular boxes which appear to have a small solar panel on top. Next to them the towpath has been dug up and refilled at some stage. What is it?

An access point into a subterranean world built by an evil genius who intends to rule the world.
You're not laughing now Mister Bond.

Here's another photo, showing the ground disturbance. It obviously is solar powered, and whatever it powers is carried towards the canal. However, there was no sign of a sluice or anything similar, and also the amount of path disturbed is far greater than that which would be required to bury a couple of low-voltage wires in a length of conduit, so presumably there is equipment buried beneath the towpath which is connected to the pillar. I really want to find out what this is, any serious suggestions?

Is that a magic Eye on the front top face? Speeding lycra detector? Happiness and joy detector? Kris will overload it!

Does look like a magic eye, also the black square looks like one of the reader type things, hold up maybe a handheld device to download data from inside, i think its collecting counts of objects passing.
Do you have one of those security bits, open the panel and take a photo?

Do you have one of those security bits, open the panel and take a photo? It would seem a lot of effort to go to just to count passing boats, especially as the section it is on is impassable to boats over 45' and it very underused anyway, I have been here nearly 24 hours now and not one other boat has come past. Nothing on it opens up, I'll pop down the towpath and have another look at it in a mo.

Water level monitor? Ground movement monitor? Only things I can think of.
