Blackburn is now behind us. Apart from too much water over topping the lock chambers of the bottom two locks, we had no problems at all. Everyone we met was friendly, and apart from having to run some water out of the bottom pounds to get levels right, it was a splendid cruise. This got us wondering. Whilst everyone seems to suggest that Blackburn is not a place to moor overnight, from other boaters to C&RT personnel, does anyone have any first hand knowledge of problems, or indeed heard any stories of problems experienced by boats? I have never heard stories about Blackburn (whilst I have regarding Stoke and Birmingham) so is it just a place where there is potential for problems, or have there been problems in the past? Sorry, we'll be off this canal soon so not too many more L&L based threads Rog

Stayed at ?eanam wharf? on our way through, behind a locked gate, no trouble at all. I picked up biggest bit of rubbish ever, 30ft of builders clingfilm, going through Burnley.

So where does this "Don't moor in Blackburn" wisdom come from?
I thought there must be loads of horror stories.

Isn't it due to the risk of falling down a hole if you get off the boat?

Seriously, someone with more internet savvy and capacity can probably fill you in.
However, as you say, al the natives were friendly (one too much so!!) but made it there an back unscathed..
PLEASE, though, Rog - stop telling them it's good - we need to keep it to ourselves.
Happy wanderings to you both, Met and George xx

I think a lot of it is what is normal and what isn’t. If it is normal to have boats moored, the natives don’t notice it. If it is not normal and you moor there, it stands out and not only do you feel slightly insecure due to no “safety in numbers” but the local bored yoof want to come and play with you, and not necessarily in a nice way.

I understand that. I understand the issues between Rodley and Leeds, having heard accounts from C&RT staff of the problems. I've never heard a tale about Blackburn, presumably because nobody moors there on advice. But if nobody moors, and there's no reason not to, how will we know Rog

We can then use your experience to decide whether to moor there ourselves this summer. If you never post on here again I think we can be fairly confident that mooring in Blackburn is a bad idea

I know a boat that stayed the night at Eanam Wharf on the way up and on the way back. They enjoyed a meal both nights at the caribbean restaurant there. However it is very restricted mooring space and was full as we came by.
I have just noticed your new tag line "home of some nasty hate filled homophobic people".
Very unpleasant, not true, and unworthy of your usual levels of intelligent debate.
Sadly some here, including yourself, are happy to engage in 'name calling' as a response to disagreement, but it seems grossly unfair to tar 'non combatants' with such a brush.
I wonder if you'd consider removing the line.

Hence the tag line is entirely accurate. It is nothing to do with name calling as a response to disagreement, it is to do with being intrinsically homophobic. Needless to say you are not included in that group. Or if you are, you hide it well!

Jenlyn posted a link to a Supreme Court judgement in the US which upheld a baker's right to refuse to decorate a cake with a motif promoting the customer's sexuality and stated that he agreed with the judgement. This is not homophobia.
