Quite a few little camping boats up here, which are really dinky and ideal for a couple for a few nights on the water. Just idle musing (and look what trouble that got me into on the Bridgewater thread ) but I wondered how big the petrol tank was on the outboard, and what sort of mileage range a single tank would provide? I know some of you lot are proper boaters and know about these things. Rog

Both have an integral tank of around 1l so will need regularly topping up for any distance. 4hp and above will normally have the ability to connect a remote tank, these are available up to around 23l meaning you can go for a fair while on a full tank.

Some pictures of the camping boats would be useful. Always nice to see boats, and pictures of boats of all sorts. Even if they are splitters with outboard motors.
Petrol storage is a bit of an issue with outboards. Until Tesla get onto it I expect petrol will be king for quite a while.
I've just ordered 2 x 101lb thrust 36v Minn kota motor pods for my yot. From america. Β£300 each for the pods. This plus motor shafts, hydraulic pipe clamps, wiring and pwm speed controllers and some trojan batteries and a big solar panel on wheelhouse top will enable silent mode which I look forward to.
Its about time someone organised a proper sensibly priced electric outboard as a real alternative to the petrol.
Torqeedo do try but they are too expensive and easy to kill (high speed brushless motor with planetary gearbox).

So without a holding tank, you have to stop and let it all cool down, before refilling.
Tank sounds essential to me.

Rog The air cooled Honda would want to be left to cool - along with any other air cooled outboard Anything water cooled is a lot less dangerous as the exhausts will be thru hub or leg meaning nothing is terrible hot at the power head, care still needs exercising though. As you say, a tank is pretty much essential for extended cruising. Bear in mind that a small outboard is usually used for getting to and from your yot on a swinging mooring or heading to the beach once you've dropped the hook. A large range isn't necessary for that sort of use, lightweight being much more important.

Someone I vaguely knew died as a result of filling his petrol mower whilst it was hot.
He took it into his garden shed to refill, and the vapour exploded.
Horrible way to go.
I wondered with the little camping boats, I guess a remote tank will be their solution.
If I get the chance I'll ask.

When I use my 4hp outboard (instead of my electric motor) I have several 5 litre containers of fuel stored in properly drained open lockers adjacent to the motor. Every hour I remove the cap from one container and from the motor's tank and use a little plastic hand pump (fixed to the bulkhead) equipped with flexible hoses on suction and delivery sides to transfer fuel without any spillage

Got a photo or two.
I'll get Stumps to post them this evening if it's convenient for him.
And yes, they have fuel tanks.

Show off! Just cos you know Dinky aren't they. 15hp Honda outboard seems a bit on the large side, but it'll never be under pressure. Jane's been googling and tells me they're not Sea Otters they're Wilderness boats. (Still think camping boat describes them well) Rog

The 9.9/15 is to do with odd laws in the states, often just a change of carburetor unleashes the heady amounts of power bestowed upon them.

That's a totally different style of boat.
Is that a camping boat then?
