It's laughable when you think how many railways have been closed. Why is no-one willing to re-open this efficient, fast and environmentally friendly method of moving freight? More electric railways, keep smelly pump-out-noxious-gases trucks off the roads.

It would be logical I suppose, what with most cars spending 95% of the time being unused. The only question is how the next hirer will feel after I have used one to take six bags of festering rubbish and a leaky Thetford cassette to the sanitary station. Self cleaning self driving cars

Autonomous vehicles can be powered by internal combustion engines. If battery power was used in trucks it would be fairly simple for vehicles to automatically change battery packs at strategic points in much the same way as fly boats changed horses. Well yes, but not what I asked, where will the power to charge the batteries come from, there will need to be a few ah available nationally. It will always be more efficient (and greener) to have a few power station size generators than millions of small generators ( i.e in each car). Electric ‘engines’ have many less parts than internal combustion engines. They also have less service parts (e.g oil) As regards auto driving, I enjoy driving That aspect seems to have been missed.

Exactly. but only if I get to drive! The money will be good if the Eurotunnel drivers salaries are anything to go by. However you have to learn French.

Easiest thing in the world for vehicles to exchange depleted battery packs for fully charged ones before starting their return journey, the concept has been around for decades.

That all depends on what some mean by ‘the benefit of society’ though. If it means EVERYONE benefits from the outcome, I’m all for it. I think the large majority would disagree that that is the status quo. It’s not all about money to be fair. It’s also about retaining the freedom to go where you want, whenever you want in comfort. The existing public transport system in this country just shows how this might not be the case.

Yep, all the Saudi's fault, let's have an invasion. In all fairness, given the numerous spurious wars we have fought based on entirely fabricated reasons, the most noble thing we could do is overthrow the rulers of a country where women in the 21st century are still routinely beheaded in public for the crime of having been raped.

Tomorrow I shall be sending another 90 litres of diesel through my Volvo B10 engine. It's a lot of precious fuel just so some kids can get some education. I wonder if they will live in a future world of electric vehicles and remember all that black smoke pouring out of the bus's exhaust pipe.
No-one is controlling the use of oil. I always am amazed at how much of the stuff there is, it's still coming out of the bowels of the Earth. It's a bit like CRT and their water management - close the canals when the water's gone, but not stem the leaks when they're spurting all over the shop. The wastage of natural fossil fuels is scandalous.

The battery technology is still rubbish though. If they held more energy for longer and charged quicker we wouldn’t need to change them.

Wouldn't stop buying oil from them be a bit more noble...
