Also no news about lightship Planet for many months. Have aliens abducted it and taken it to Saturn?

And to think our insurance company wants a hull survey every 5 years! No insurance = no CRT licence! And then they'll be coming to grab our boat! How does George get away with this, yet the Polish bloke Andrzei with his caravan-boat in London isn't? Perhaps Andrzei should be asking this?! move to craftinsure. No survey. A few more pounds a year won't add up to the cost of dock and survey. It's a major problem, people coming in from the EU, owning boats over here, taking up canal space that could be used by hard working true brits. Some of them even bring their wives! Give em red hot mooring pins up the jacksie I say.

In addition, if Vidar is over 30 years old and over 23ft in length, you have in your possession a survey report not more than five years old from a qualified surveyor, with all recommendations complied with.

Oops, yes you are right, I'm thinking back to the Dawncraft 22. Maybe I should book the surveyor for when I'm in the dry dock. 4 years since last done. However when I pay the insurance next Feb the survey won't be 5 yrs old till May. So I think I'll wing it.

What's the point of just 3rd-party? Yes, if we bump into someone else's boat, or a bridge and smash it to bits, or kill (or horribly maim at least!) someone. Without fully-comp the insurance company will just laugh if our boat sinks or someone nicks it. Our insurance company wants a survey every 5 years after a boat is over 25 years old, I think that's fair. And I bet all other insurance companies require the same - well, why wouldn't they? Who wants to insure a rust-bucket that's about to go glug-glug-glug down to Davey Jones's Locker?
"However when I pay the insurance next Feb the survey won't be 5 yrs old till May. So I think I'll wing it." - how is that going to help if the insurance company has demanded a survey? After May your policy will become invalid.

An injury claim would be a much bigger dent in the wallet than replacing the boat would be.
That makes 3rd party look sensible.
There is an argument for not owning anything you can't afford to lose but that comes from someone who has never had a new car, houses or paid for holidays despite being able to afford them.
Insurance is all part of the capitalist economy scam.
The only reason you would be able to make a claim is because thousands of other people pay every year and never claim, and insurance salesmen get to live in big houses and drive nice cars.
Its a bit like the lottery. I suppose it would be nice to have millions but you are simply taking it off other people many of whom probably can't afford it m
Look after your shit and don't rely on others to do it.
Maaan.
(Easy for me to say this I know)

After May your policy will become invalid. No it won't because what they ask for is a survey which was carried out within the last five years on the day that the insurance commences. The insurance does not become invalid on the fifth anniversary of the survey.

Also no news about lightship Planet for many months. Have aliens abducted it and taken it to Saturn? No, the aliens who abducted it on 21 September 2016 took it to Sharpness, . . as you well know ! There is in fact some good news in connection with ''Planet'', but it concerns it's owner rather than the ship itself at present. Alan Roberts has finally emerged from the lengthy, and very nearly terminal, illness which has prevented him from taking any effective part in the process of recovering his ship from the thieves who took it away from him. Watch this space !

Yes, accepted - but a survey will need to be undertaken within that next year, after which it's time to pay the insurance again, eh?

Owned our boat for 15 years.
It's 26 years old.
People keep telling me I'll need a full survey before getting insurance, but I've had no such request as yet.
We'll see what happens in four years time.
