Hang on a minute..'Jazz hands" was all about those whose mental health ..autistic etc have problems with noise..I can see that... OK so can be seen as nannie state but think there is a valid argument there.. the Manchester student union has votes this in for their events. I suppose it depends now many students they have as members that have am issue with noise vs those that have sight issues.

2I hate to admit it but haggis has a point, many posts here are fairly shallow. That's an interesting post from someone who appears here, totally anonymously without even indicating their gender. I'm not suggesting that you should, but it does appear a contradictory statement. Or have I misunderstood a joke? Rog

We need Jim to cross examine this and see if its a joke. He can recognise a joke like the back of his hands because he is a pro.

I feel this forum is more about being relaxed and discussing a mutual interest rather than worrying too much about competitive "I know more than you about this" sort of discussions. I imagine the "shallow" thing is going to be about foxy. Yes he is a bit shallow (call a spade a spade) but at the end of the day it's not the end of the world. Certain people dominate the forum (I'm one of them). I don't really know if that's a good thing or not. On the one hand a forum needs content but if certain people are too "loud" maybe that has a negative influence.

I agree totally, and meant no criticism. But I am genuinely intrigued that you should think our collective posts are 'shallow' when you're the anonymous one. One of the strengths of thunderboat, in my view, is that we are mostly very open about who we are, our boating experience, and background. The recent untimely and sad death of Andy (stumpy) brought home to me in quite a shocking way, that this place has created a whole new dimension of friends. People I feel I know, and yet have (in some cases) never met. Shallow seems a wholly inaccurate description to me. Rog ETA Posted in response to winn ... but mm was too quick for me innit

I hate to admit it but haggis on cwdf has a point, many posts here are fairly shallow. Of course many of the posts here (and any other forum I've been remotely interested in) are shallow. People can't be/shouldn't be serious all the time. What matters is how people react when the 'crunch' happens - TB passes my test in those circumstances.

This forum will never have the same content as canal world. Canalworld started in about 2006. Things have changed massively since then in the world of internet "social media". Mostly a drive towards a single platform.
The effect has been that canal world has become a searchable database of fact and opinion based canal boat knowledge. There is huge knowledge there that is without doubt but at the end of the day there is a limit to the number of topics that can be started. Other than paint schemes.
People looking for general information probably ask their devices using Google as that is the dominant search engine.
On balance I believe it is impossible for TB to ever have the same level of searchable information as CW but at the end of the day that's not the end of the world.

Again, no criticism was intended.
I now see that you are equating 'shallow posts' with not being 'technical posts'.
I am singularly uninterested in most technical threads being a mechanical idiot.
I am grateful that experts give up their time here to answer queries, but I often struggle to understand the questions, let alone the answers.
Haggis was stating thunderboat was 'shallow' in comparison to CW.
You appeared to partially agree.
I was curious that was all.

I'm not sure we need to have the technical content.
it is talked about over there too. but that isent this place. we don't claim to be a canal discussion forum.
I'm not convinced the other place is too hot on technical issues either. you won't get any straight answers there.
But here I do know that if I need any help with the boat there were enough people here that I trust to give me the correct advice. try it. we have enough experts here.
but the rest if us, live andrew said we just like chatting with like minded people, it does not have to be restricted to talk about boats.

and yes we don't have 12 years of content. I wonder what cwdf was like in it's early days.
MM makes a good comment the likes of facebook are saturated with narrowboat and canal pages. it's very easy to type a post am they 60 replies. it probaly makes cwdf look shallow
