Don’t know about delays, here in Northampton /warwickshire there are 2 big site offices and compounds being set up. 1 near chipping warden and one near Fenny wharf so those contractors must think they’ve got an agreed deal. David

I would love to see the whole thing binned and the vast amount of cash redirected to the NHS, but I believe I'll be disappointed.

I would love to see the whole thing binned and the vast amount of cash redirected to the NHS, but I believe I'll be disappointed. Rog Well, I disagree. We have HS1 in east Kent and it has transformed journey times to the North and Midlands. I shudder to think of the old days of a 2+ hour train journey from Ramsgate to Charing Cross, struggling across London on the tube laden with suitcases then spending the rest of the day blasting black snot out of my nose. France, Holland, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Italy all have world class modern railways, why shouldn't the UK? As for spending it on the NHS, the small amount of money which didn't go into "Carpetland" would simply be wasted giving hip transplants to old age pensioners, which in my opinion is like putting four brand-new tyres on a car in order to tow it down the breaker's yard.

High speed rail works well on the continent because of the size of the land mass. It could be worthwhile to put a high speed link from London to Edinburgh but London to Birmingham isn't worth it the time savings don't add up.
as for all the freight the obvious answer is to get people to buy less worthless shite in the first place. Except that does not serve the manic capitalist greed system.
To be fair given that will never change rail has got to be better thank road.

"In October 2016, Andrew Jones, a transport minister, suggested renaming HS2 as the 'Grand Union Railway'........... because HS2 is not about speed and is more about connectivity. Why not call it The Gravy Train Railway - we all knew from the start the contractors and sub-contractors would be taking the piss with their 'budgets'.

I doubt hs2 will result in any less Lorrys on the roads.

Actually I hope the opposite Kris. People seem to view it as purely a move to speed up passenger transit times but it has another function that is often overlooked. It removes a large proportion of passenger traffic from the existing line freeing it up to carry more freight ....... if you are in favour of attempts to get freight off the roads this is important. It's just that ruins at least two spots on the waterways that I really like. It'll be excellent for Stabby who will be able to get his boat in those locations and wait for a train!

It's okay I don't, but it was the only reference I could find to this. Could have been worse I guess - you could have been forced into posting a Daily mail link!

I doubt hs2 will result in any less Lorrys on the roads. It probably will. Container trains run up and down the West Coast Main Line day and night on their way to Hams Hall, Tamworth, Trafford Park International Freight Terminals etc and each one takes 50-odd trucks off the road. However, more would be able to run if capacity was freed up because a new north-south line was built.

so those contractors must think they’ve got an agreed deal. It's called the "laughing all the way to the bank" contract. Once again, they'll have the 'Government' (are they worth that title?) over the proverbial barrel. Ministers receiving mysterious brown envelopes, of course.

I doubt hs2 will result in any less Lorrys on the roads. No - the illegal immigrants have to get in somehow.

I doubt hs2 will result in any less Lorrys on the roads. It probably will. Container trains run up and down the West Coast Main Line day and night on their way to... ...deliver shoes to women, ordered from Zalando.
