Oh - that Mr Postman in Dismal-Land got me thinking about this. I used to watch this. It's a bit like The Monkees (also good!): Thats going back a long way, my favorite segment was "Danger Island"

My curent campaign to slow down cyclists on footpaths is too have earphones on and pretend not to hear their frantic bell ringing when they try to overtake😂 ....have yet to work out a cunning plan to slow them down when approaching from the opposite direction🤔

I am trying to put together a traditional Humber Barge "long shaft" a sort of king sized boat hook . I have the massive blacksmith made hook, the gape being about 9" and the whole thing about 11 inches long. I also have acquired the "button" for the end. The bit I have so far been unable to find is the shaft ..... about 12 foot long and about 2" diameter. (It also needs to be a light enough wood so that I can use it.) It occurred to me that strolling along the towpath with this essential bit of boating kit would be a serious impediment to a passing cyclist

sounds like a lovely hook there - photo ? I'm a major fan of traditional boathooks Got loads of them. Mostly just the iron bit but a few with shafts. As for shafts they are really awkward to get hold of. Most modern shafts are ash which is much too heavy really. What you want is spruce. There are some punt poles made of spruce but very £££. I did find a pretty long pole in the river a while ago its about 15ft and some sort of hardwood but only 1.5 inch diameter. Inspecting it closely I noticed it has a scarf joint half way along. So made of two 8ft dowel rods I guess. Seems to be very well done obviously with good adhesive and possibly with a central pin/dowel as well. Might be worth looking into that option if you know what to do with wood I know its a bit sad and defeatist but in a lot of situations aluminium is a better option. All the thames locks now have ally shafted boat hooks and a lot of punters use it. Not so pleasing but it is more durable and available.

Good luck .. Love met x CD's and DVD's in son's store as is all my important stuff..diaries and writing Furniture in other storage I'm in limbo land drifting aimlessly whilst I wait on sols to exchange and complete...they had their final warning yesterday...if they don't get it done by 05/12 I'm planning back to back cruises for 5 weeks and then will plan to look for somewhere cheaper. I'm not 100% convinced ref house going for....longer it takes more it allows doubt to creep in. However if Exchange occurs and Completion then I've got a well thought out plan to action and I'll be dynamic for a few days...have to be as per usual family assistance absent. Have to then sit down and do maths..tough decisions to make. Whatever I will get through..
