For me the weakness of outboards is they make a boat look ugly. OK so you could build them in to a well of some sort but then you get complications with exhaust fumes and steering. I like boats which are pleasing to the eye.
Outboards are for dinghies and speedboats.
And narrow boats with car roof boxes on top.

Keep up at the back. What? You can't because racing elephants are blocking your path? It has a 20hp Honda egg whisk on the back. First and last lasts. Hi Jim, I would be interested knowing if your 20 hp Honda is plenty powerful enough to drive your boat, how many liters per hour it's using on average on the canals, and lastly what's the weight of your boat roughly ? Peter. The Hull had a Honda 10, old one, when I got her, did trip up to the mooring from Callis Mill, about 6 miles. OK, slow, adequate going forwards, no stopping power! Did some research 20hp came up for boats that size, so started looking, found the Honda at the water sports centre in Colwyn Bay, collection only, so no other bidders. 10 hours use! £1300. Got a remote kit and high thrust prop, works a treat, steering a doddle, reversing easy peasy. It uses less fuel than my old Honda 10, top speed on the cut 5.2 mph. A 15ltr tank lasts about 3 days, so less than 1ltr hr. I have fitted an hour gauge, but not actually done the sums. I should. Boat is 33ft at the waterline, about .5 m draught so displacing about 10 tonnes. Afaik it's a 12ah output, adequate for use when cruising daily, that's now supplemented by 135ah solar.

Those 4 leaf clover props are pretty impressive.

Those 4 leaf clover props are pretty impressive. They beat eggs, Shirley.

20hp = 9 litres per hour. Well, that was for my 5m open boat on the sea coast of Finland and the lakes.

2 stroke . 4 stroke is 4 times more efficient and double that if you are crawling along a ditch at 8 km/h

Thank you very much for this info Jim, if I ever get another boat, I'm seriously considering a 4 stroke outboard now, as that will make everything much easier and more economical to build and to maintain on a low (in my case very low) budget. Peter.

You mean "the beat egg whisks" surely ? No! Oh God save me from apprentice comedians. Here we go, Shirley, for the hard of thinking, it's a pun. They are more efficient than eggs at boat propulsion, they also whisk eggs. I did it with as little words as possible, KISS, keep it simple, for the stupid. Shania understood it.

I hate the KISS principle. I’d say the truth is often inversely proportional to complexity. For example, I’ve always been suspicious of those who use ‘elaborate’ and verbose language to show off, rather than make their point as a child would. Surely it’s better to increase the chance of your point being understood by everyone...well unless you are trying to hide something... The same goes with mechanics. How often do we have to shell out for new sensors on cars when the very thing they are sensing works fine? The story about NASA investing millions of dollars developing a pen which writes in zero gravity conditions also springs to mind. Didn’t the Russians just use a pencil? I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with technology. As I get older I am finding that I tend to be happier doing simple things and doing things manually. After all, when the chip fails, it is nice to know you can still survive!

I like when things are simple. Agreed. The example of sensors on cars is a good one. The best vehicle sensors are the drivers eyes. Obviously because they have direct communication with the brain. Personally I lead a very simple life with little reliance on technology other than the phone.
Its the inclusion of the word "stupid" that I hate in the KISS principle. Why is it not KIS?

Why is it not KIS? ...because people have to add a Stupid word to make an acronym look clever. Actually some of the best acronyms don’t make up words. I like RTFM for example.

I could understand "keep it simple scum" but "stupid" is such a weak and pointless word.
RTFM is OK because it has the F word which has some force behind it.
Stupid is a word kids use in primary school.
