Someone calling themselves 'NB Caelmiri' has just joined CWDF and is asking for help with a boat move to Leeds which will take them into the lower Trent.
Will any TB member who is also able to post on CWDF kindly direct him over here to where he can get some better advice and/or help, . . . and bump up the TB membership count !

Hello, Alastair. The good news is the extended stoppage at Marple is in fact sending you the quicker, easier way round. Going Trent & Mersey and then getting on to one of the three choices of route across the Pennines isn't the best way from Apsley to Leeds. Have you checked to make sure the Leicester Cut (top of Buckby to West Bridge, Leicester) and the river Soar (West Bridge, Leicester to the Trent) are/will be clear of stoppages when you'll be moving ? The other thing to think about is how well your boat will perform on the river, . . . will it run at full power/maximum rpm for 2 - 3 hours without over heating ? If not, the passage on the lower Trent to Keadby needs planning/timing around what the boat can cope with. Have you decided on a definite time and date for the move yet ?

Hi Tony!
Thanks for your reply! I'm going to be leaving Apsley (or roughly somewhere between Rickmansworth and Apsley) on the 16th March so based on Canalplan's timings, I should arrive around Leicester on about the 21st. I'll jump onto CRT stoppages and see what they have to say.
My engine has been very reliable for the last two years and I'm getting a service done in the next couple of weeks, so will check for anything that might be an issue but certainly I've not had it revving for anything like 2 hours at maximum revs. Although I was cruising at around 2000rpm for 2 hours on the weekend and it seemed happy enough. I'll be heading up to Rickmansworth this weekend and there's a couple of stretches that are free of boats which will let me open her up a bit!

We had a thread about @welly going up to Leeds a couple of weeks ago if my memory is worming properly. I suggested the western side canal route for the scenery and so did dogless. It appeared that there was no particular hurry. If there had been some sort of emergency I would have said stick it on a low loader out of Watford or MK

We did too and I was definitely thinking that that might have been my way but while it's not an emergency to get up there in time, it'll make life a bit easier if I'm not working from my boat somewhere in the middle of nowhere with ropey internet access It's mainly because it's a new job.

Sensible plus the weather is amazing. I was doing a windup attempt on TonyDunkley with the road transport comment

What is make, model and bhp of your engine ? What type of cooling system - heat-exchanger, and if so is it wet or dry exhaust, or if it's keel-cooled/skin tank, what is the total immersed surface area of piping or tank, and is it equipped with baffles to stop the hot water from the engine taking a shortcut from the tank inlet connection to the outlet ?

Hells teeth that's a bit technical !
You will be asking him about his eyesight next and will he be able to avoid hitting the bridges. I have heard there are sometimes mist problems on the Trent.

It's a Vetus M4.14 and 33hp. Uses a heat exchanger, that much I know. As for wet/dry exhaust - I'm not entirely sure, and not entirely sure what that is! I feel like, from a brief bit of googling for "wet or dry exhaust", it might be a wet exhaust as it has a hose that looks like it allows water from the outside of the boat into the engine (or exhaust system or something else).

Wet exhaust is one which spurts water out the side with the exhaust above the waterline. Relatively unusual on narrow boats.
The point is that skin tank cooled engines are known to have overheating problems when asked to do extra work like on rivers.
If there is no water coming out of the exhaust then its a dry exhaust. Unless there is loads of steam in which case it could be a wet exhaust with a blocked inlet filter.
I'd put money on your system being skin tank dry exhaust and Tony is right to flag this as a potential overheating problem on a tidal river.

A dry exhaust on a narrow boat means a skin tank.
Why do you think there is no skin tank? I bet there is one.
Eta it is perfectly normal on a narrow boat to have a skin tank and a heat exchanger cooled engine.
