More evidence last night, as if more were needed, that CWDF is NOT the place to go for advice about boating and/or inland waterways.
In a thread entitled "60ft widebeam on the L&L?" some of the resident goons, including that prick 'dmr', have revealed the astonishing news that the Leeds & Liverpool was never meant for 60 foot long widebeam boats !
This astonishing revelation is backed up with quotes such as - "I cant help with the L&L as we are much too long, but from what I have read a 60 foot wide[beam] either won't fit or will be exceedingly difficult . . . ", and - "A 60' x 12' boat will confine your parents to cruising either East or West of the Pennines.".
Words fail me !

I havent bothered commenting on there about it. Its to much pain to say the least, how they think a boat is going to be stuck on there forever is beyond me, but what do I know with a widebeam that is if you include fenders close to that size, daft they are

I'm not really sure why you bother with the place Tony? It's full of idiots and you know it is. Although I'm sure cart would like it if the remaining old working boats would stop navigating. Then they could drop the level even more than they have done already.

I would have thought that by now, most people would know that a special type of boat that is called "Leeds & Liverpool Shortboat" was specially made in order NOT to be able to work on the canal section they were specially made for. There must be a certain logic in that, which I haven't been able to catch, as of yet, but I'm still young enough- and always willing to learn something new. Peter.

To paraphrase my post to Bodger ...... what is this CWDF of which you speak ? is it some form of malady ?

More news from CWDF about that canal that's too small for the boats that were specifically designed and built to work it ! :-

All I really wanted to know is can you travel the L&L on a 60ft widebeam . . . . . .
and the latest reply (from vapouring old fart and ex-Mod 'Theo') :
"Perhaps someone has already answered this but I would not think that you would get through the Bingley staircases. You can do it in a 60ft narrow boat because you can fit the bow or stern into the angle between the top gates and the wall. A wide boat needs the full clear length."

Haha even after Pluto has answered, some people still know better. I'm quite convinced, and have been for some time, that CWDF and C&RT are both controlled and run by alien life-forms that have mutated into something with a passing resemblance to human beings. What other explanation could there possibly be ?

We really need drone footage of that situation . Peter.

Huh, . . you could get a good few more coats of paint on everything in that photo before there'd be a problem ! I love the way you've got that chain roller lined up to run down the handrails, . . . nice touch !

I reckon that you might be able to squeeze a 72 foot widebeam in there (Sabina H 66 foot but the rudder sticks out nearly 2 foot + and wont go hard across so needs about 69 foot) SAM_1522 by mudlarker2, on Flickr

When going down it's always good/neccesary to get the bow against the bottom gates, to make sure that you reduce the risk of getting hung up on the sill.
In the Freycinet locks here your rudder has to be able to do the 180° as it has to be turned hard over to avoid the sill, no room to play with left over, this of course only if your on a Freycinet size barge.
Peter.

If 'Sabina' is 66' along the deck, John, I reckon she might just go through Thorne Lock with the stern to the bottom gates, in both directions. The long chamber at Bramwith won't take much more than 17' wide though, . . . what's her extreme breadth ?
