More evidence last night, as if more were needed, that CWDF is NOT the place to go for advice about boating and/or inland waterways. In a thread entitled " 60ft widebeam on the L&L?" some of the resident goons, including that prick ' dmr', have revealed the astonishing news that the Leeds & Liverpool was never meant for 60 foot long widebeam boats ! This astonishing revelation is backed up with quotes such as - "I cant help with the L&L as we are much too long, but from what I have read a 60 foot wide[beam] either won't fit or will be exceedingly difficult . . . ", and - " A 60' x 12' boat will confine your parents to cruising either East or West of the Pennines.". Words fail me ! I was convinced it was a wind-up, but sadly not. I was tempted to start a thread titled 60 x 12 wide beam on Aire & Calder.

If 'Sabina' is 66' along the deck, John, I reckon she might just go through Thorne Lock with the stern to the bottom gates, in both directions. The long chamber at Bramwith won't take much more than 17' wide though, . . . what's her extreme breadth ? 16' 6" ..... I think the slightly larger rubbing bands might have added a couple of inches, but I don't think she has spread at all ...... to check exactly I would really have to make up a gauging frame The first problem I have to get round though is adding enough ballast to get her under Heck bridge. I reckon I will need some 10 ton more to get her to a decent draught ..... and the price of that much steel/pigiron is eyewatering (can't be anything lighter as she hasn't enough depth below the flooring).

Coming from Goole you're onto the New Junction to Bramwith and then onto Thorne and Keadby Cut before you get to Heck, John. Although if you're tight under Heck Bridge, then you'll probably be the same at the railway bridge going out of Thorne towards Keadby. Is Heck Bridge the lowest one through subsidence at the moment ?

Perhaps they be thinking of the Calder & Hebble. Isn't that 58' or 56' in a certain stretch? I still think twerps who try to get their boat in locks diagonally are... well... twerps.

That's the latest info I have at the moment Tony I can't remember for certain how much room there is under that railway bridge just out of Thorne, but I reckon it's around 12' or even a bit more. " Welly'' will be through there around the end of March, so maybe we could get an accurate measurement for that bridge then.

One of those cheap ultrasonic tape measures works well for doing bridge heights. hold it against the underside of bridge the ultrasonic wave bounces off of the water

that bridge at Heck is definitely tight, when we went through that with Bartholemew there was a scraping noise as the cab of the crane went through

A while back when Kellingley Colliery was still working it was Stubbs Bridge, not far from the pit, that was the lowest.

All being well you will be calling me a twerp towards the end of the summer. Well how long is your boat? And why would you be attempting to go along the Calder & Hubble-Bubble? I know... you're trying to get to the lesbians of Hebden Bridge. Hedonistic capital of West Yorkshire. Millstone Grit and josticks.
