The helmsmans course is a good idea for giving confidence (would make a great present). The farm moorings where Mr Stabby is are lovely, in a great position and a fraction of the cost ... and there are many such farms around the Shroppie and Trent & Mersey. I must admit I do love the community spirit at Colehurst Farm, we're always up and down the mooring helping each other out. And although it's not residential in the legal sense, Farmer Don doesn't mind how long you spend on the boat. He's absolutely astonishing, 93 years old and every day he's out lugging great big bales of hay about, sawing up wood etc. Doesn't even need glasses to drive. Apparently his father lived to 107 and he was exactly the same right up to the day he dropped dead. My mooring fee is due at the end of this month, I asked him how much it was this year and he said "same as last year" (£312.50), which is what he says every year. Boaters who have been here 15 years say he's never once raised the mooring fees. Apparently he just likes narrowboats. How much! I changed my mind, let me know if a mooring comes up...

I do have to have a CRT L3 mooring permit too, and that's more than the money I give to Farmer Don but even so the whole lot still comes in at less than half of the cost of my old mooring at Brinklow Marina, which is in itself one of the cheapest marina moorings on the network.

In labour, if not as money? Help him shift some hay?

In labour, if not as money? Help him shift some hay? We do help him out when he needs it, if you trawl through the archives you'll find the post I made after Hurricane Doris brought four trees down which blocked access to the farm, and we were there first thing in the morning with chainsaws to clear them. But generally I pay the amount he charges, and I don't see that as "cheating" anybody. He may be old but he isn't stupid and like anybody else in a position to offer mooring spaces, he has the right to set the fees as he sees fit.

He sounds like a man who enjoys having boats there by his land.He clearly isn't one for making as much dosh as he can.Things could possibly change in the future when his rellies end up in charge.Enjoy & keep well in with him & his family ! 😄

The farm is enormous and I imagine he makes enough money from it that a small increase in mooring fees would be neither here nor there to him. We are somewhat concerned about what will happen when he moves on to a better place as his son does not seem to be as favourably disposed to boaters as he is, but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Well, I only have another six years to work and then I can retire. Although I'd keep the mooring if I could, if that becomes impractical then I can just go CCing, I'm already fully set up for that, I'd just need to sell my car and my generator and then off I'd go.

Not sure if you were referring to me but I would suggest arranging a plane crash if you're after some dosh. This is what dumped the wad on my lap. No it wasn't a Nigerian one. Yes, I forget you are a feckless flouncer, @someboater . Did you get the autopilot software tweaked then. It was a Cessna. 15th November 1973. No autopilot and I was a foetus at the time

Enjoyed a sunny cruise down to the Pig Place for breakfast, coffee and to buy bacon and eggs.
A lovely place, but as you'd expect, not cheap.
Moored below Aynho as dark clouds were gathering and a squall building.
No sooner into the boat than it was lashing down ... stopped and the winds also gone ten minutes later.
Not sure whether to push on or stay here ... drink my coffee and cogitate on the matter.
