Some sort of rubber/cloth material stuck around the paddle and they can't shift it with the keb etc. I'm sure someone is supposed to put in a "how pathetic" type comment at this point. How pathetic and inadequate. And they call themselves a navigation authority. Its an outrage.

I have no complaints to make ... the two guys worked very hard to keep boats moving, and even now C&RT have merely put an advice notice out rather than a stoppage.
However, I suspect they will eventually have to put stop planks in to shift the obstruction ... of course the situation is further complicated by the fact there is no road access to the lock.

We're off to Wakefield. Got to the boat last night, though one lock before mooring. Should get down to Sowerby Bridge today. We'll be stopping in Hebden Bridge to do shopping, elsan and water. The rain has cleared away, going to be a few nice days ahead.

Nice unexpected jolly out on the water yesterday. Was doing some welding (mark 4 hatch lifting system) so didn't hear the phone. Suddenly a van arrived "Quick grab your kit, we're off to collect the "George Dyson" from Swinton (just below Waddington lock) and bring her to Goole. Only had time to throw my tools in the wheelhouse and grab my jacket and we were off !!! She's about 105 foot with 17 foot beam and has a 6 cyl Gardner No lockies then unexpected help at Sprotborough (they were there trying to sort out problems with a paddle) and helped us through....... so it was a slow run. It was phone a friend time and we then had someone meet us at Barnby Dun bridge and drive ahead of us opening the bridges and setting the one remaining lock for us. This is a big help because the lock/bridge landings have all been altered/shortened/lowered for narrowboats and from a light barge that towers above the landings it's difficult. No particular photos this time as it was an identical (though a lot slower) run that I did just a little bit ago on the "Gamma" At the moment the "George Dyson" is moored bow to bow with me at Goole alongside the "Sobriety" ....... well some of it is alongside .... the rest just sort of hangs out Hopefully it is going to be here for the gathering this weekend.

Pretty countryside at Sommmerton Deep .... we have on occasion seen deer in the fields nearby, but harvesting was going on this time. One 'm' ... two 'm's ... you understood ... it really isn't necessary to correct typos and spellings provided meaning is clear. But I'll leave you to enjoy your pedantry naughtyfox Rog

Beautiful morning here in Newark. If you look past our bow you can see a fellow forumites boat in the distance. It looked very pretty last night as well.

Its on the Geograph website I just google imaged it. Not my photo. Last time I went through Somerton Deep was in 2008. Eta and first time was 1994 Interesting to see the bridge bars on the hire boat. That was a funny thing I think most of them have been removed now. Bit of history I would keep if I had one of those boats. I was just discussing the bridge bars with an old friend yesterday. I wonder how they came about. Perhaps a hirer hit a bridge with a wooden top NB and caused extensive damage. Was it the people with the bridges who asked for them or the hire companies who chose to add them?. And did any private non hire vessels have them fitted?
