Gordon Brown was a nightmare.
Intellect the size of a continent but worthless as a leader. How on earth did he get in... Oh yes it was that equally awful Blair with all his white teeth who took the easy route by getting himself elected twice by smiling then resigning and put Brown in power. Nothing quite as satisfactory as deciding when to go eh? Must be good for the Ego to walk away rather than be kicked out.
Blair was a bit like Cameron. A coward.

You couldn't be further from the truth Vince - posting as much crap as I do it's hard to drop off the scene quietly! Last time I had to ease up was due to pressures of work, several members who are friends messaged me outside the forum to check everything was ok. This time you all know the reasons why! I hope the forum continues growing and doesn't get legged up by the narrow-minded outlook of a very few. All the best my Yorkie munching prostitute murdering, super strength lager swilling friend 👍🍻 To stop posting because you have more pressing obligations I get. To stop posting on a forum because other posters do not share your views I don't get. So I have decided to award you this... I get where gazza is coming from. I'm fine with people who have different opinions to me, I'm sure there's plenty of them but the relentless hateful postings that keep coming in threads that have absolutely nothing to do with politics just becomes tiring. Some how, every post becomes argumentative - which is fine if it's on topic - or needlessly political. There seems to be few occasions where some bile about foreigners or brexit or politics doesn't rear its ugly head. It's honestly becoming hard work. I'm going to stick with the forum because in the threads I've started, that thankfully haven't become overly politicised, there has been some really valuable, helpful information. There are lots of very knowledgeable boaters on here and that's what I personally joined the site for.
I'm trying to avoid the politics forums because clearly we will never see eye to eye on that subject, but politics is spilling into boating forums more and more and it seems there is nowhere left to hide. Obviously if I don't like it then I can just go "sling my hook" but that'd be a shame because as much as I disagree with the politics of many members of here, I don't think you're all bad bastards and as I say, you have a lot of great knowledge to share.

If you are talking about the thread about closed-down pubs, for which I suggested several possible reasons, somebody added that an influx into an area of people who do not drink alcohol was an additional possible reason, and to be honest I don't see that as an unreasonable point to make.

It went a good bit beyond that, but never mind.
I have to be honest, I can better put up with the politics and 'little england' postings, than the purile name calling spats that surface occasionally.

I understand the other point of view as well though Vince. Sometimes it is just one fairly mild observation and if those who disagree just shrugged and thought to themselves "twat" all would be well (and this goes for both sides of the arguments by the way) It is when opposing views are expressed then rebuttals of the rebuttals so it ends up as a discussion/argument of a totally different subject. Much the same happens on actual political type threads where it can degenerate (usually the same posters involved) into abuse and tit for tat name calling which is just a bit stupid and boring. As we do (normally self moderate) when we are dealing with certain posters (and we all know which ones) to make sure they are not doing their normal stirring type of post, which seems to be their idea of fun. There are also a couple of posters who have an abrasive style of posting, I am unsure if they are deliberately trying to start trouble or if it is just the way they write. Whatever, if you think someone is being a twat .... just say that and leave it would probably be the best route ..... but it is not easy if someone has pushed the wrong buttons for you. I like this forum very much and there are very, very few on here that I would not care to meet. I am quite happy to argue my point and I don't think I get abusive .... at least if I do only rarely. ..... but I do have buttons and some are good at spotting them and pressing them. mostly though I try and let it blow over my head.

I suppose it wouldn't have been a proper happy birthday thunderboat thread otherwise.

No, wasn't referring to that or specifically you. Just as a general reflection of many of the posts. It was a bit exaggerated of me to say every post, it isn't every post.

Learn to skim over stuff - choose what you wish to deal with. And if you wonder why people are angry with issues, have a think about why they might be angry about them. Not everyone has the money to buy a narrowboat and glide along at one's leisure. Thunderboat is a bit rough and tumble, but that's what people like - you get to choose who you wish to be friendly with, you make your own friends. You are not told with whom to make friends by 'moderators'. The term 'rough diamonds' comes to mind. There are some very intelligent people on Thunderboat - you should stick along, as you seem a decent sort - but be ready for some surprises.

There was a time mjg used to contribute to discussions, and occasionally start threads. Believe me, if you only seek conflict with dogs as it appears you do here, you will get bitten. Just ignore stupid comments as much as possible, rather than contributing to the cycle of increased insults. Rog
