Good for you. Books are written by some of the same sort of people who post on the internet. Books go out of date in the face of changing technology and regulations. Books show you one way to skin the cat when there may be several. Books are not tailored to a specific question. But never mind, if you have to pay for something that must mean it’s better! A bit like employing a professional! However book authors generally don't cloud their advice by arguing with other supposed 'experts' over who's advice is correct leaving the reader utterly confused about what the answer to their query actually is. Trying to 'Out expert' each other brings the quality of the advice into question IMHO. You also have to be on a forum a long time to gain an understanding of who might know what they are talking about and who one can rely on to give advice. If you are new and need an urgent answer this doesn't work well as you can end up making things worse because some random clown gave you bad advice. True, there is no “discussion” or “peer review” in a book. But I say that’s a bad thing. Yes I take the point about confusion but if you are that easily confused, you probably ought to get a man in. Or even a woman, if you are desperate. No I don’t think you have to be on a forum a long time to see who to believe, it usually becomes apparent by listening to the rationality of the arguments and seeing where the majority view lies.

If you start with the premise that the questioner is a mongtard who will blindly and thoughtlessly follow any daft advice given, then yes a forum isn't the best place for a single definitive answer.
Perhaps MJG thinks everyone else is a thicko incapable of; any sort of judgement?
Personally I like to chat things over in case I've missed something blindingly obvious - which happens. A forum is great for this, a book can't chat.

To understand the rationality of an argument though does in lots of cases require some understanding of the subject in hand, which people sometimes don't have hence they asked the question in the first place. I agree if some one has very little or know knowledge of a subject it can be better to "get somebody In' but often people are keen to learn to do things themselves not least due to cost. A good book is a lot cheaper than a tradesperson. Internet advice is of course normally free, which it is for a reason, ie you often have to wade through a load of crap to get where you need to be.

The reason I rarely post, ask for, or give advice on forums is that nothing seems to have a simple answer anymore. You think you know the answer to a simple question posed on say a boaty forum, maybe answer with a brief solution, and before long, reading through other responses, you realise only splitting the atom would be the solution. Now about these ecofan thingys.

I'm a convert and would happily recommend them for the reason I use one....to prevent the heat detector being beaten senseless by a wild woman wielding a broom. However maybe on some boats they just don't do what folks want them to. I like on line discussions on what needs doing then if I get in an expert at least I have some concept of whats what and can ask quite sensible questions....

The sort of answers that irritate the hell out of me are the ones where you are judged for asking the question. One of the comics (can't remember) used to do a character that was some sort of expert, who's first response was always "Ooh you don't want to do that!". I believe that most people asking for advice tend to be the sort who have a 'general idea' of what to do but wish a 'sounding board' to be sure, or the type of person that wishes to be steered towards one of several possible options. I cannot believe too many people genuinely ask for advice before jumping into a project blindly, with both feet. I still maintain that forums are just a form of entertainment for those of us not interested in computer games Rog

If you have aone idea, it's about learning and adapting what you do know and simple explanations give you the confidence to have a go. And you go to a forum for that.

"ecofans work for some folks but not from others" 2 +2 = 4 for some folks, but for some it's 3 or 5. I wonder why? Facts are facts. Unless they are facts on a forum.
