Surely the only issue was that the fender was pushed too far forward into the top of the gate and no one was paying attention enough to realise. No, . . the real 'issue' is that the boat's bow hung up to an extent that led to the boat sinking in the lock chamber, and everyone's focus is/was on the speed and effectiveness of the crew's reaction to that, instead of focusing on a means of preventing the hang-up in the first place. Identifying and eliminating the cause is always a better approach to problem solving than taking steps to alleviate the problem every time it occurs ! Aren't we saying the same thing? Anyway I think we all agree that paying attention is the crucial thing. Hanging on side walls has not been mentioned here, but that's the only situation I have experienced at Hillmorton. It was only momentary but the very sudden 'drop' was alarming, and consequently in narrow locks I am always conscious of checking side wall clearance too. Rog

You won't get any argument about paying attention at all times from me, but as regards everything else we couldn't further apart ! It's very plain from the report that MJG posted a link to on page one that there was a strong possibility that the use of ahead propulsion power to keep the boat away from the cill was a significant contributory factor in the hanging-up and sinking. The report was quite thorough and is well worth reading, . . . if only for the reason that it marks the first ever worthwhile contribution that fartin' Martin has ever made !

Fuck off you senile old tosser. Go and get your inco. pad changed, you are starting to whiff a tad. That report has been around for yonks, if you knew anything as much you like to think you know about narrowboating you would have already been aware of its existence. I knew about it years ago.
