I did wonder when considering boating in France if their elsan emptying points looked like this Virtually everytime I have come across loos like that in rural areas and villages, they are broken - the costs of maintenance are no where near covered by people paying to use. Public toilets get closed down all the time because they cost too much even when there is a charge for use. I honestly can't see charging for walkers/cyclists/caravaners solving anything.

I still say keep facilities strictly for boaters and put in security locks. Keys sent to license payers.
People who pay more for their licenses to get platinum keys.

the one key fits all is the issue isent it. any system that will have different access requirements for different systems will be better.
I like the card thing. the pump out cards need updating anyway. a card can easily be programmed to access different things.
it only needs to be a super cheap rfid card. contactless technology. just needs a small reader connected to an electronic lock. secure bin areas, elsons, showers, water, bridges etc etc.
it could even be put on locks to secure or control access at certain times.
I'm sure they could do a deal with a company and get a job lot of locks.
if walkers or cyclists etc want access for their trip they can pay for a card and get temporary access.

Nfc reader on the lock, register your debit card, use debit card as proof, and/or an app on the phone using Nfc.

Agreed but how would you propose to charge people ? Realistically By changing the locks to electronic ones and controlling access. It would stop boaters who haven't paid a liscence from having acess as well. So what's not to like? The real answer is to get those chumps dossing in the bogs to bog off, and give them a kick in the nuts if they have broken any locks or vandalised anything else. Talking of fitting special locks is nonsense. And CRT aren't going to be laughing all the way to their Swiss bank account if a few Pennine Way ramblers put 20p in a toilet in Gargrave.

Talking of the Pennine Way - when are you starting it? Most likely this coming October. I may be having 3 weeks off work then, instead of the usual one. When we were up in Littondale 2 weeks ago we thought why start at Edale? We can do a week at a time, perhaps first stretch starting at Malham. What's wrong with getting the best scenery first? And that still gives us 2 weeks to boat to Bristol & back to Newbury.
