Marks and Spencers' own brand tartar sauce has far too much salt in it. Might fare better in Waitrose. Sainsbury's tartar sauce is OK. This is for fishfingers in frying pan recipe.

Blimey, how many have you got ? RN or National ? Done the trip South twice but never North. North - downriver - needs a good bit more care than coming upriver - South - from the Humber. Two reasons for that , firstly, downriver you're on a falling tide, so if you park your boat on a mud or sandbank you could end up admiring the same bit of countryside for quite a while, and secondly, if your destination is through one of the side-locks, then ideally you try to time your arrival with enough depth over the outer cills, or lock tail mud/sandbanks to get in when you arrive. The condition and the power output of your engine is just about the least important thing of all, . . I wish I had a quid for every mile of tidal river I've seen go by whilst being pushed along by some under-powered, clapped-out old knacker of an engine and gearbox, . . but the fuel system and the cooling system you rely on to keep the engine running IS important.

According to Nicholsons, Keadby is theoretically operable up to 7 hours after HW, but due to sand bar build up, more realistically 5 hrs. And that is local high water not high water where you are setting out from. (But no mention of size of tide /amount of fresh). So I don’t really see how you could do it without going through low water and pausing somewhere near Keadby for the tide to come in a bit. There are mooring dolphins just a few km up river from Keadby (and other places further up) which are for commercial barges to sit out low water. Whether pleasure craft would get a row for using them, not sure. But is there actually any commercial traffic beyond Keadby these days?

Got it from Martin’s link. Yes I remember reading it at the time. My only comment is that once you have traversed the river around low water (and survived!) a few times, I’m sure that will be the way to do it. But I think for the novice/amateur it might be a bit daunting. Hence the suggestion to ride out the low water on a dolphin, rather than being under way around LW. But totally take the point that fighting the flood won’t last long.

Stunning morning here on the Trent. Had a few laughs with some other boaters last night, the Muskham ferry is a pretty decent pub. The well named cruiser Four Candles, complete with images of spade handles just set off towards Cromwell lock. We are heading up river probably to moor in Newark. The current looks to have slowed slightly since yesterday, should help Nick.

Moored in Newark. Went through the lock this morning with the boat that had made several attempts to reverse into the pub mooring yesterday. Today he decided not to bother with ropes whilst locking up. After he spent the next few minutes going side to side in the lock, no real damage done I was thinking until his wife decided to walk down the gunnel. Oops! In she went, life jackets do go off quick don’t they 😀. Anyway alls well, moored by them now in Newark. We had to smile when she told us it was her birthday 😂😂😂
