I am a great fan of Bushmills single malt, 10 yrs and 16 yrs. Then my brother brought me over some Armorik (Bretagne whisky) - it is just as smooth and the bonus is that it's cheap as chips (well on the Brittany ferry and in France it is). Bushmills is ok. It's Irish whiskey ... so sweet to my taste. I'll keep an eye open for Armorik Rog

Bells is awful stuff. Only drinkable if diluted with Irn Bru. Ha, you fell into the Fox trap! I thought he'd be along, pontificating. ππ¦π

I can't drink spirits. I tried last year on a bit of the Thames which is really dodgy for beer shops. Above Oxford towards Lechlade it's a nightmare getting the beer. I don't store alcohol products on board for more than a single day's rations.
Bottle of Grants (yes I know but I am a cheap skate) and couple of bottles of ginger ale (the old whisky and ginger thing innit). Anyway after a 15 hour day boating in the yot I finally tied up at 2.30am under some trees somewhere in the middle of nowhere not on the footpath side. Quite an awkward spot but it had been a fairly long day. I slipped and got one foot slightly wet in the river.
Never doing spirits again. Drinking beer all day no problems but spirits =slightly wet right foot. Bad idea.

I like spirits neat. Remy Martin, Bombay, Bells. I fancy making sloe gin, but it might be a year or two, just planted the blackthorn out back. Give you your due, you got 2 out of 3 right!

Let's face it, if gin didn't contain alcohol nobody would drink it. Sure, one might taste slightly better than another but let's not kid ourselves, we drink because of the alcohol above anything else.

Woods Full Strength Navy Rum Ah yes - many many mango seasons ago we used 6 bottles of navy rum to steep several bags of "Humpty Thunder" π But now we are grown up and dont partake in those activities any more π

The fact that you and JohnV don't like gin does not prove anything ... personal preference. I don't like rum ... proves nothing. Essentials of survival (food and drink) are the basics of life ... over layered are luxuries we choose by taste ... like smoking ! Please try to explain the motivation for smoking in any form Rog

To make out that it's all about small differences in taste is disingenuous and quite often, driven by snobbery. I don't like snobbery in any form which is why I often comment on such threads. As for smoking: well I smoked for many years myself. Why did I start? a mixture of peer pressure and the general stupidity, myself included, of the young. I'm now hooked on my e cig which isn't a good thing but is much better than the alternative. Other than this vice I lead a pretty healthy life, I'm happy with that balance.

Another vote for Aldiβs gin but herself likes Gordonβs. Enjoyed many G and Tβs on the back of the barge with some nibbles around 6pm. Had first rum and coke in Venezuela aged 17 waiting for a ship home now in the summer I like to have a rum and coke with Mount Gay rum .

I don't necessarily agree about the purpose of drinking is just for 'any effects' or that choices are all down to snobbery. I agree that it is all personal taste, and perhaps celebration of having money we can dispose of, other than on essentials and necessities. Where we choose to fritter our surplus ... drinking ... smoking ... glider flying ... puncture repair kits for inflatable dolls ... is just personal choice. Rog
