Not since I was a child have I watched this programme ... I used to find it hesitant, stumbling, largely boring and cringe worthy, much like other self congratulatory award shows ... but being the BBC it is reported like a national event so difficult to avoid.
I see that Lewis Hamilton won ... sports personality ? ... really ?
Were it an achievement award I could better understand that ... but personality ?
There was a push on local social media outlets to have Kevin Sinfield (Rugby league) nominated for running seven marathons in seven days to raise funds for Motor Neuron Disease following the sad plight of Rob Burrows (38 yrs) a recently retired player, who is deteriorating rapidly with MND.
If it is about personality, surely this is the kind of background that should be sought ... I wondered what any fans of the programme thought.

Also people have short memories. Whenever you see a vote for 'the best film of all time' (example only) the top twenty usually have quite recent titles in them. I've never heard of Kevin (sorry).

BBC SPOTY has never been about personality...or Sport. Princess Anne won it. Nuff said.

Its got nothing to do with their personality but what they have achieved in the year.
Its boring anyway, 8 million viewers last year down to 4.75M this year and apparently at times that was down to 2M.
I agree that the runner should have had it.
Thats what the spirit of the trophy should be, whilst you can't knock what Lewis has done ther probably were more deserving people on.
Henderson came second, all he did was captain a club to the league title. If he lifts the world Cup with England I'll consider voting for him.

The only good thing about it is the unsung hero award. However if you just had that no one would watch.

Is it not just a marketing thing? Raise the profile of sports celebs who are routing money in the "right directions".
Or is this too cynical.

Maybe it's about time you did something useful for perhaps something called a wage, and you might realise not everyone goes to work or does any good just for money.

Why do they include 'personality' within the title? There are awards for all kinds of things but the notion of rewarding or even formally recognising the somewhat abstract notion of'personality'is absurd.
The BBC need to move on in many ways. They could start be naming next years show 'sportsperson of the year'. Having said that, even if they do move on in this way I won't be watching. I find awards shows cringe worthy. The ones involving actors are particularly bad, vomit inducing.

I was considering doing the Boater Of The Millenium award some years ago (bloody hell it is 20 years!!) but could not get enough enthusiasm to get it organised.
It's a shame really as the BOTM award could have been really amazing and perhaps got tvflix coverage in its 21st year.
