I know that many are 'rugger types' on here but given that there might be a little interest somewhere, and not wanting to pollute the magnificent 'don't know why, there's no sun in the sky' thread I thought I'd start a dedicated one.
So, how do you think this evening will go?
Having moved to Wales I now (naturally) hate the English. Also, I don't like the general 'wokeness' around the England set up. Whether this is masterminded by Southgate or he's just the muppet who has to be the public face of it is unclear but anyway, I could never support a team whose ethos was based around this nonsense. It's a pity really. As a City fan I like Walker and Stones. It's not their fault that wokeness is more important than their talents, but there you go. I dislike Sterling both as a person, and a footballer, so that's all OK.
I predict a 2-1 win for Ukraine. Kane or Sterling will score for England leading to immediate calls for them to be knighted. However, in the last few minutes Zinchenko, a vastly underrated footballer, will be the first to score direct from a free kick during the tournament. Southgate, previously a national hero will, with the flash of a skillfully delivered set piece passing an overrated goalkeeper, become the fall guy for a storm of derision. It won't be 'coming home', once again.

Fair enough. I won't bother watching it since I now know both how the game developed and the final result. Phew.

There isn't a B&Q in Ukraine.

Based on 'mystic Clinton Cool's' earlier predictions, I guess the footballers will be through to the semi finals then Of course a new, young, largely uncapped England Rugby team take on the USA on Sunday ... physical battle, guaranteed not to be a nil nil draw, guaranteed not to include grown men rolling about pretending to be mortally injured, and live on 4 at 2pm. I will ignore it even more assiduously and with greater zeal than the footie. But I hope you enjoy the game.

I don't mind that you don't like or understand rugby ... it is an entertainment and we choose what entertains us. I hope the soccer lads do well and win again. But in truth putting up a great performance and losing is no disgrace. Rog

The players are much fitter now and tactics have moved on. Running with the ball used to be much more common than it is now. Modern rugby seems to be mainly about territory and the avoidance of mistakes. Running with the ball, long flowing moves, eventually ending up with a winger was a much more interesting watch than the current attritional tactics. Just my opinion of course.

Your opinion suggests you don't watch much rugby ... the Premiership semi finals and final were unbelievably open, high risk, exciting games ... and whilst there have been occasional tactical 'arm wrestle' type games (which I also enjoy) the league has seen a huge increase in try scoring. Generalisations are always tricky and perhaps best avoided ... I did recently see a footballer, blood streaming down their face, get up and play on ... but it was in women's football Rog

I did recently see a footballer, blood streaming down their face, get up and play on ... but it was in women's football Rog I agree that there are some decent matches. Perhaps most of these are at a slightly lower level? At the highest level though, international, these matches are rare. Most matches end with an entirely predictable result with the only question being how big the points difference will be. If the opponents are closely matched you usually end up with the attritional encounters where territory (safety) is everything and running and passing is very limited due to the inherent 'risk' of doing this. Safety first, a greater onus on not conceding rather than scoring. I guess it's the nature of the game, the more it develops, the more negative it becomes and then unless you're a purist who appreciates dour tactical battles, the less entertaining it becomes.

I heartily disagree, and believe your comments merely demonstrate your prejudice against a game you don't fully understand ... but that's okay, it's just entertainment. This is why I refrain from direct comment on the game of soccer itself, as I don't watch it. However I have seen the appalling antics of the multimillionaire players, and cannot tolerate the childish deceit, and lack of sportsmanship involved ... that's my prejudice But it cannot be disputed that soccer is our number one game ... I hope they win today and go on to reach and win the final. Rog

The banning of tackling, changing it to a 'family game', the money and most recently, its politicisation have all been turn offs. I still watch from time to time. It's a good game in that a lesser opponent has a better chance of winning than a superior opponent. The outcome is less predictable than many (most?) other sports.

It's coming home.
Although they have two fantastic players that could both produce match winning displays I would like to think our team and the way we play will be too much for them.
It will be tight but we should have enough.

Don't forget that first we have the Denmark vs Czech Republic match which is just about to kick off in that well-known European country of Azerbaijan.
