Haven't you lot got your own rugby thread π First off I have to watch the qualifying. Sorry .. I responded to the 'rugger types' comment and it all went downhill from there Certainly a buzz for the match around the little back water we're moored near with folks stopping to chat all mentioning 'the game' and our hoped for success. Rog How did you get into rugby? You don't come across as a posh, public school type.

Don't forget that first we have the Denmark vs Czech Republic match which is just about to kick off in that well-known European country of Azerbaijan. Probably another example of misguided political correctness. A bit like holding the world cup in the hub of football that is Qatar.

If its Qatar it will probably be about the money.
Nothing to do with the amazing adventures of a couple of dozen ish blokes running around on a confined lawn kicking a ball around. Just money. probably the green back type.

I heartily disagree, and believe your comments merely demonstrate your prejudice against a game you don't fully understand ... but that's okay, it's just entertainment. This is why I refrain from direct comment on the game of soccer itself, as I don't watch it. However I have seen the appalling antics of the multimillionaire players, and cannot tolerate the childish deceit, and lack of sportsmanship involved ... that's my prejudice But it cannot be disputed that soccer is our number one game ... I hope they win today and go on to reach and win the final. Rog I've mostly switched off from football too. The banning of tackling, changing it to a 'family game', the money and most recently, its politicisation have all been turn offs. I still watch from time to time. It's a good game in that a lesser opponent has a better chance of winning than a superior opponent. The outcome is less predictable than many (most?) other sports. doglessThere is a lot in what Clinton Cool says and I am mostly in agreement with him on these points. The game is a pale imitation of itself in just the last 5-6 years. The trouble is there is a big shit storm brewing over historic player welfare - just like the NFL have been through. That said the game as we knew it had to change, players are now by and large basically 16 stone plus athletes, any hits around the head are going to be big - what with trauma to the brain being cumulative there is only so much that can stay as an acceptable risk. You only have to look at the likes of George North to see the punishment his body has taken, to the point he went back to the regions so he could play less club rugby, be centrally contracted by the WRU and kept in as good shape as possible for international games. IMHO there is No way if he had stayed in the Prem or gone to Europe would he be still playing, easy to forget he is 29 years old! The sports governing bodies canβt stand by and let those huge risk continue unchecked.

@gazza ... nothing has changed other than our awareness of physical damage. Some players (great players too) have had their careers cut short by injuries (Harry Ellis , James Simpson-Daniels etc) long before the head injury protocols became prevalent. The physical nature of the game has always risen incrementally ... all the players getting bigger, stronger and fitter as the game progressed beyond professionalism ... and yet Cobus Rheinach, Faf de Klerk and Harry Randall, with many others, perform at a high level despite being little fellas. Everybody is getting fitter, and stronger as you would expect from full time players ... but size remains relevant to ability ... a good little 'un will run rings around a giant... Cheslin Kolbe for example Talent beats brawn. Rog

"Listening to the whole street cheering and screaming for England, given this last year, just feels wrong. Akin to supporting the German national team under Hitler. Nobody should be cheering this banana republic right now, least of all cheering for a bunch of millionaires somehow exempt from the same rules their fans have to accept." The whole street cheered for England in Finland?

It was a fantastic game. I haven't seen a more comprehensive beating since I bumped into Rog and Jane in Banbury.

Absolutely delighted with Sterling's performance and even more delighted the way the pundits are bigging him up towards a knighthood. I conservatively estimate that 15 million pounds has been added to his transfer value in the past 3 weeks. That's great business, even for a filthy rich Arab. Or should that be a rich filthy Arab? I'm not sure. Either way, I'm sure you get my drift.

At the same time I feel a bit sorry for Ukraine. I had a girlfriend from there when I lived in Poland. Although she looked more like a Russian shot putter than the beauties the camera person this evening regularly perved on she was a nice girl, and could drink a hell of a lot of vodka.
