Hopefully no mako sharks around, one was hooked off Tywyn a week ago, just 10 miles south of here.

Out of interest Clinton Cool if you get your super new fishing friendly kayak will you be able to continue to use it through winter (on decent days) or will the sea be out of bounds until spring ? Rog

Everyone likes a good length, but for different reasons. Any idea what top speed you can achieve on your 14ft? My current one maxes out at 3.6/ 3.7mph. The one I'm looking at can apparently achieve just over 7mph. I'm not expecting that but over 5 would be very nice. I never thought to measure it and I'm not a particularly strong paddler but I reckon it could be 4mph+. You'd have to be pretty fit to do 7!! My current one can struggle to around 4 with absolute maximum effort but I can achieve 90% of this for an hour, 2 at a push. If it's the same with the new one it would be great but 75% would do nicely.

Rog That's a great question Rog and something I've been giving considerable thought to. Previously I thought November through to February would be out of bounds. However: I have a 5/4 wetsuit. I tried it in 7 degree water in February, didn't feel the cold at all. It's cold water that kills more people than anything else. Close to shore, I think the risk is acceptable. I don't know yet whether I'll enjoy paddling in a wetsuit. Certainly, I hate wearing gloves, never do, even if my hands are freezing. If I don't enjoy it I won't do it. I'll give it a try, when the water cools down a little.

I did a VHF radio course with a keen sea kayaker he had radio plus EPIRB and I guess probably has an AIS beacon as well. All quite handy if you end up in the drink and need rapid assistance.

No and I've no intentions of getting them. I do however have a waterproof phone case (tested-works) don't stray far from the shore and accept the relative riskiness of my chosen hobby.

I see them quite a lot on the Thames. The don't look very nice to paddle. Slow and don't go in a straight line. Also quite a lot of windage.
Never used one myself so can't comment other than from observation from my viewing platform.

OK, trust me. I would only be using it on the River Lark, it would never get near the sea or a strong stream. Phil

Yes and no Rog. I've decided on the Marimba, the longer one. First choice yellow, second khaki, third green. They are on their way from South Africa but useless company here can't take orders till they arrive, and don't know what colours are coming. Seems like it's going to be early September.
