A great idea for a northern day out with all the family - “let’s all go down the laundrette for some fun!” Yes we all know you have staff to do your washing. No, we do it on the boat. Very taxing … put clothes, detergent, fabric conditioner in washing machine. Turn it on. Some time later take washing out and put in tumble drier. Some time later take out, fold and put away.

Who said need ... sometimes a service wash whilst you're at the pub may make a pleasant break. Rog I reckon this love of launderettes is probably more because that's where the local swingers hang out looking for hook-ups.

I can use my water tank for showering and I don't fill the boat with condensation ... but I realise Hudson owners wouldn't be seen dead near a launderette ... and may struggle to put themselves in others situation. The point I was stumbling to make was ... quaysider 's laundry is a business ... lots to be done in a quick turn round ... to be able once in a while, to let someone else have the faff and take a few hours off may be appealing. No matter . Rog

No matter . Rog I suspect my dislike of laundrettes stems from having a mother who never had a washing machine until after I’d left home and never had a tumble drier ever. Formative years as a small child spent hanging around in a steamy boring laundrette with only old women’s magazines has put me off for life!

The only thing that puts me off about launderettes is the cost - a typical "turn around" has me doing 4 loads in the 9kg washer... for the price of a few hours of engine running/diesel/oil change hours ... I'd imagine it'd cost more having it 'done' for me... plus the extra I'd be spending in the pub lol.

I find launderettes (wash days) quite therapeutic... seven kids at home, washing was a never ending task for my sainted old Mum. Rather like vacuum cleaning ... the noise takes me back to childhood and sends me to sleep And the amount you and David drink quaysider , extra time in the pub (without us to keep you on the straight and narrow) could get very expensive ... not to mention messy. Anyway, on the subject of washing machines, had a bad washing day yesterday (at home). Put my washing in, everything fine. Came to take my washing out, horrible scraping noise when drum rotated. Then I remembered stupidly putting a very small jewellers screwdriver in the breast pocket of my shirt whilst working on the tug annual at Aboyne. Oh dear!
Looked for screwdriver in drum, in a hole in drum, around the door seal, took out heater element (which allows one to see the bottom space between inner and outer drum). All no joy.
So only recourse is to separate outer drum. Lots of dismantling followed, but it transpired that being a cheapo Beko washing machine the outer drum wasn’t screwed together, it was plastic welded together. That sort of inbuilt inability to service (just buy a new one) should be banned!
Then I noticed the screwdriver, minus its blade, poking through the plastic outer drum. Oh well, that’s knackered then. New washing machine on order from AO, since a new drum assembly was about 1/2 the cost of a new machine and it’s already fairly old.

Ah, the lack of a real world education has caught up with you. If mom had bought a washer instead of your Latin/Greek/classical education, you would not of had to buy a new washer!
