Next week, we're heading into new boating territory on Ellis - instead of turning right at Great Haywood, we're going straight on.
It's just occurred to me I have no idea about where to re-stock the boat ready for the next punters... The plan is to collect said guest half way up the flight (coming by train) but obviously we'll have needed to be there the day before.
Please could I ask those in the know, if we moor at the bottom of the flight (prior to lock 11?) is it a walkable distance with a weeks shopping?

It's quite a spread out flight so it depends what you define as "walkable". You'd be better mooring on the VM half-way up which is by both the station and an Aldi..

It's getting on for two miles to the largish Coop and Aldi. Could you not moor on the 48hr visitor moorings between locks 5 and 6 (a bit noisy from the road - A5).

ah right - maybe thats the plan then... we can cope with noise - certainly after mooring above kings lock near the chippy... that WAS noisy.
Do they get filled up quickly (the vms mentioned)? ...I'd rather not have to go up past and have to turn and go back down again.

It is ... however you can moor in several places up the flight. Do two locks and there's a long peaceful pound ... still a long walk into town, but a little shorter. Between lock 8 and 7 is more mooring but nearer the railway ... shorter walk. If I were you I'd moor for your one night first visit above lock 6 ... close to a noisy road and the railway, but an easy ten minutes into town and the Coop and Aldi (and you'll pass the railway station). You can also moor above the top lock ... again an easy walk into town (so often busy) but moored outside houses ... which is why I prefer the moorings (although noisier) between 6 and 5. There's full services below and above the flight. Hope that makes sense. Rog ETA the moorings above the locks fill up quickly ... I've never failed to moor between 6 & 5 ... think cos it's so noisy

Coming from gt. Haywood, Rugeley is a great shopping stop with Tesco and Morrison’s both very close to the canal. Then Ventura at Tamworth/Fazeley, although it’s a fair walk. There is also a Tesco express very close to fazeley jn.
Atherstone locks come in 2s to start with, with fairly long pounds in between. Lovely moorings 2 locks up. Ok moorings 4 locks up. 6 locks up you have a stretch of visitor moorings but it is a little grotty and a lot of train noise. After that, locks are close together until the top

We always walked from the moorings at the top of the flight. On the way to the shops with empty bags, visit the town, including the square. The main shopping street takes you yo the Co-op/Alde area and the back down the road Alde is on.

It's a few years back but looking in my notes I see that I moored just above the top lock and shopped at the Coop ...... and knowing me, it would have to be close
