If we all just did sailing then these sorts of willy waving contests would never happen If only it was true. Some of them rank highly. Also there's showers to clean up afterwards.

That's right ... just encourage the grumpy old sod Rog Who? Me? I was expecting a disparaging post from him for disagreeing. I think that's what Alice was worried about. Well not worried but you know.

The photo may be misleading ... he was actually quite a good distance from the bridge at that time. Rog Distance off from the bridgehole isn't the point. The curved length of concrete towpath coping straightens out, as far as I remember, about two and a half boat's lengths, or 60 - 70 yards, at the most, from the Braunston side of the bridge, . . and the photo shows that curved coping abeam of the boat. At most he's just over a boat's length from entering the bridgehole, and he's a long way off the right line, . . a good 10' further out from the towpath than he should be. He's also operating, or just about to operate, the engine controls, just when he should already carrying headway under power, and be steering and concentrating on keeping 'bank effect' doing most of the work of taking the boat round the turn and into the bridgehole on the correct line. Do you actually know what 'bank effect' is, . . how works, or how it can be made to work to advantage, with ANY type or size of vessel underway in a narrow restricted channel ? It doesn't look as if your 'professional boat mover' does !

As I understand it the "bank effect" is where the buggers take money off you while pretending very cleverly to make you think they are trying to help you.

Mr Bernoulli and his effect. Which is just another example of conservation of energy. As first proposed by Emilie du Chatelet. Who was a girl by the way. 1706 - 1749.
Sorry dunkers, you were beaten to it by a French girlie and 200 years!

Ignoring for a moment the horribly nasty floating item did anyone else notice what an incredibly beautiful curve there is there? That is one thing I do miss about the cut. Those curves. They are a work of art. The "boat has been deliberately cleared in the image for the purposes of good taste"

If you had paid someone to move your brand new boat through an obstacle course without knocking lumps off it, you couldn't have hoped for a better result.
The fact that he scored less than 6/10 for artistic impression from judge 'The Dunk' would be frankly irrelevant.

'round the next bend is something new' they say. And suddenly you've done another few miles Rog

Of all the places one of my favourite runs was an evening getting dark cruise down the Paddington arm of the Grand Union.
Awful slum area these days and no locksfor miles so rather boring but hell's teeth that was a good bit of work getting that done !

To be honest I'm struggling to think of a stretch I didn't enjoy. Rochdale nine was tough ...Huddersfield up to Slaithwaite was incredibly difficult ... but at the end of the day you have that glow of achievement Rog

I've walked from Kings Cross down to Limehouse Basin then from there up to the Angel following canal and Thames. I sidetracked into Victoria Park to check that out. Some of it is lovely, then there are the graffiti stretches that are a bit dodgy. When I used to child mind the London one I spent many days just wandering along the canal towpaths. I've explored some of Brums and intend getting few more miles explored in September if I can.

Little sis n I plus Molly(it was week before she RIP) accompanied the Bishop on an 8 mile pilgrimage that ended at a Rugby Church... I cannot remember why I was ask to go..probably to swell the numbers cos there wasn't many of us. Little sis is a church warden so gets involved in all things churchy.
