The winding hole is now blocked off with a boat and a sign indicates the land is private, no mooring, landing or winding. How can a private landowner stop you using C&RT waters ? Anyone know details on this please ? Rog

Iβm sure I know someone who knows next to nothing about it. But will post shortly as if heβs an expert. Iβll give you one guess who? π

Anyone know details on this please ? Rog I think there are a few winding holes on the Shroppie that are like that. One or two rather graciously(!) say that itβs private, but that winding is permitted. I doubt youβll get a definitive answer on here, maybe ask CRT?

Thanks ... I have asked C&RT but just wondered if anyone here or the other place knows having asked previously.
Seems strange as you would expect C&RT to claim the water even if the bank is privately owned ... hence end of garden moorings.

Rog I think crt are working on the principle of let it go to rack and ruin. Then the goverment will have to give them more money.

Anyone know details on this please ? Rog It's a (disused) purpose built wharf, . . not a purpose built winding hole. If you want some 'details', why not start with the owners of the boat and the land ? Ask them if there's one of C&RT(Ltd)'s pseudo legalistic nonsense End of Garden Mooring Agreements in place in respect of the length of outside bank that forms what is/was the wharf.

There are many 'private anomalies' on the Shroppie with licence and mooring charge exemptions and private wharfs. There are several where winding is with the owner's permission such as Shebdon, Brewood(Countrywide)High Offley Nr The anchor,High Onn, Chillington, Soudley and Cheswardine, The Wharf, to name but a few. Boats can be kept without licences at Chillington, and High Offley (e.g Lily Pascal),to my knowledge. These all go back to the original agreements with the land owners who were not convinced of the need for a canal. Maybe TD has missed a trick here as if a boat is exempt from a licence, it probably does not need a BSS Certificate.

Looks like the hole is part of the cut itself not the adjacent land parcels.
Would need closer inspection perhaps using the land registry map tool
Edit - revisiting this image for a moment it looks like the boat blocking the winding hole might actually be precisely aligned with the parcel of land marked on the old map.
interesting.
I'm observing that lately there are quite a lot of interesting things going on with land. It is probably overpopulation creating pressures that were not previously seen so acutely in this country.

Not forgetting the waterpoint there was closed for many, many years due to the farmer's claim of a "contaminated borehole". I have never used the reinstated one ...

Not forgetting the waterpoint there was closed for many, many years due to the farmer's claim of a "contaminated borehole". I have never used the reinstated one ... I think the local water authority put the block on this as it was from a borehole contaminated with phosphates from constant fertilisation of the adjacent fields. The new supply comes from 'proper' water mains.
