I’ve had a bit of an idea for a solution of how to fund the waterways in this country. How about we nationalise the water companies and rather than paying huge bonuses to the managers or dividends to share holders. All the profits go into the total water infra structure. So rivers, canals, reservoirs and sewage systems. This would enable the investment to stop raw sewage from entering the waterways and maintenance of the canals. I know this is a radical idea and a lot of older people hate the idea of nationalised industries. But it’s going to take some radical thinking to sort out the situation. At the moment the water companies are making minimal investment and all the profits go abroad, at least this way the profits would stay in these isles.

I worked for a Nationalised Industry just after graduation - British Aerospace. We spent most of the time larking around and going to the pub.
Although I suppose I did write the floating point maths micro-programme for the Rapier Field Standard B missile defence system CPU. Seems to have worked OK, lots of bad guys shot down.

I think it's a great idea! Probably too far left for the unthinking majority though. As for Nationalised industries "messing about " that's down to management Shirley, no reason why it should be put up with, any more than we would put up with being robbed by greedy shareholders.

Great idea kris ... I'll vote for you. How the hell did we reach a point where we've sold off our utility companies only for foreign governments to buy them ...where water companies were privatised and plundered to the tune of 73 billion pounds only to then need taxpayers help to rescue them before they poison all our rivers. The country's run mad. Rog

The country's run mad. Rog It all started when some clever people in charge of running the country decided that a free market economy would result in cheaper essential services for the consumer because the cost of production would find a natural level which would obviously be cheaper than a state-run non-profit structure and we believed them. Well, a majority of people believed them. And no matter how many times this is found to be bullshit we keep on doing it, which is by one measure the definition of insanity.

Would be interesting to see how high up the agenda Navigation was in a company with such a broad remit.

Would be interesting to see how high up the agenda Navigation was in a company with such a broad remit. you wouldn’t have one company idiot. But I’m sure navigation would be more of a priority than it is for crt.
