When I was about 12 years old, my sainted old Dad took me to our local Yorkshire Penny Bank and opened an account in my name.
Over the decades I never changed bank, although the bank changed and is now Virgin Money.
I am not happy with their (lack of) service and constant closure of branches ... travelling as I do, all the branches I used to visit have closed down.
I am considering switching bank.
I have read the process and how direct debits and other business are set up for you over a 7 day period, seamlessly and without any problems, with the switch covered by guarantee should mistakes be made.
But has anyone done this and have experience of how well the process worked?

They are basically on line only, but parent company HSBC if you need to visit a branch. But why on earth would you need to visit a branch? The process went seamlessly and I seem to recall I got Β£100 for my trouble.

I don't do online banking... although I don't know how long I can continue to hold out.
Travelling around I like to have the choice of calling at branches.
Glad it went seamlessly, thanks.

Rog Living aboard I do do online banking - it's a case of having to! I have a current account with the Nationwide (building society, I know) and find there are quite a few branches still open across the canal network. They seem to have a good, fair ethos, even offering long term "members" preferential interest rates and earlier this year to help with the cost of living crisis gave you cash back on your food shopping. Admittedly it was limited to Β£10 a month for three months but a generous gesture nevertheless.

It is Nationwide I was considering.
It's Jane's building society and always seems to be branches wherever we go π

Rog If you are not participating in online banking and such because you feel it is unsafe, I would suggest you acquire a laptop for this purpose only (perhaps also using the .gov websites for car tax and the like). It needn't be a new one, second hand will be fine so long as the HDD is reformatted. Then install a bunch of 'anti' programs and run them before you log on. The chances of anybody intercepting your activities would be vanishingly small.

You are talking to someone that trusts everyone (including boat thieves ).
My mum is like that and I'm glad she doesn't do online banking - there is a lot more than just being hacked to consider.

Feel free to elaborate. It's about things like being phoned up and scammed into transferring large amounts just because the caller is from your Bank.

I donβt do online banking and I donβt want to. I go to an atm get the cash I need then spend it. Find a branch if I need to anything more complex. If we all do online then all the branches will disappear along with cash, I think we should use cash and the local branches as much as possible. If money becomes completely digital and online then the humans are fucked as big brother has won. As it is something like only six percent of money is cash already?

The chances of anybody intercepting your activities would be vanishingly small. Using a dedicated App is safer than a web browser. Although I think the whole βunsafeβ thing is not borne out by reality, it is only borne from ignorance. Most, or probably virtually all banking fraud is carried out by telephone scams. I have the App on my iPhone, thumb print to gain access, it is quick and secure and you can see exactly how rich you are at a momentβs notice. On the rare occasion when some old codger wants to give you one of those antiquated cheque things, you can pay it in with the App too.

It's about things like being phoned up and scammed into transferring large amounts just because the caller is from your Bank. or pretending to be a police officer, thatβs very common I believe. More fraud is committed by social engineering than hacking. 120 million last year apparently.
