Went to move the boat t'other day, batteries flat, left a small light on inadvertently. Solar had also been switched off, switch had got knocked. Brought batteries home, tried charging, no joy. So ordered 100ah lifepo, charge rate up to 14.6v, however alternator puts out 14.7/8 at full whack, so have ordered an adjustable regulator to fit, trim it at 14.5 to be safe, then all will be well. Was planning to go to boat this weekend but no power. Ah well. B.O.A.T!

My Podium launch has a Honda 10 on it with charging and electric start. I added a LTO battery (max voltage 16.8v) it has behaved normally and just sits at the alternator voltage. How are you dealing with the split charge ?

I’d regulate it to a bit less 13.9-14v if you can because if your are running your engine for a few hours you will be holding the battery at 100% which is not what Lifepo4 like. You will have to alter your settings on your solar regulator as well if you don’t want to over charge your new exspensive battery.

So there was a light on but nobody was in? Sounds about right.

I don't know.

Given that most generic over the counter batteries like LFP 100Ah modules have BMS protecting the high voltage maybe the thing is to connect it and see what the outboard motor does. It might not be a problem.
Yes OK one does not want to hold the voltage above 13.6v for extended times as it will shorten the life of the battery but they do generally warranty them.
Also Jim is an 'old codger' so longevity if the battery may be a secondary concern.

It did occur to me that using a Honda outboard as a generator could be interesting. OK so it may only be putting out 12 amps but how many water cooled silent generators using a thimbleful of petrol are there available ?

Honda make quite a few.

Already ordered the regulator , £20+ PNP. Probably easier to fit inboard.

I don't think you read my post properly. The only water cooled generator I have come across made by Honda was the 3610 horsebox power unit. ...but how many water cooled silent generators using a thimbleful of petrol are there available ? Honda 3610 was a very nice package actually. I think it could have been adapted to provide hot water. Twin cylinder Nice generator. Sometimes these get taken out of horseboxes in favour of Diesel units and one can get a very nice item cheap. A bit large for a Boat so small it needs a Mondeo silver roof box.
