We used to have chickens and a peacock in the previous life now days its a dog and a budgie[Eric] He will appear in a bar near you soon!! My father had peacocks for many years. It's funny the way they just wander around the estate in their own little world. I liked when they would get on the roof of the house and screech "helllp" at the top of their lungs.

I do wonder whether I could take 2 or 3 hens on the boat with me, low wire cage run on the roof maybe, when we go on a journey. Set the run down on the grass by towpath when we moor up. Has anyone tried it? As for cockerels, anyone can keep hens, no matter what it says in any bylaw or deed, (allotment act 1948 IMMSMR) but cocks are a nuisance. Mind you my neighbour is more fanatical than me, he has a bantam cock, but it's crow is somewhat pathetic so nobody minds.

we TRIED to rescue some chickens on route to the chop via the battery hen welfare trust... you have to leap through an awful lot of hoops to "prove you have a safe and appropriate"home - including a visit to check on your suitability... It all got a bit difficult to coordinate - on the day we were supposed to meet a lorry load in a lay-by and rescue the appropriately "re homed" number - the rest would continue on to their fate... In the end, we got sick of being buggered around and bought 3 from a local farm for 8 quid each - Tika, Korma and Masala... alas now all rip. I once picked a load up on the A12 that had fallen off a lorry on their last trip, a couple were already dead thanks to other traffic.

Theres an odd looking boat with a bulge in the middle that moors up at Braunstone and cruises down the S. Oxford that has chickens..they put them on the towpath in a wire cage and I think transport them in a boat thats tied behind..cannot quite remember.

Oh Patty, what a gift, you set it up, I knock it in; "a chicken butty" Soz, couldn't resist. I don't fancy a chicken butty, too much trouble and cost, licence etc,.

And as for the butty, if one grew salad in planters on the roof it would be a chicken salad butty.
