How did we get from a RN DM2 to a BMC1.5 ? Progress thats a matter of opinion. I do consider the bmc a classic in its own right, just not my kind of classic. Waiting for my injectors coming back from having new jets and being setup. Hopefully tmw I do hate not being able to move the boat under its own power.

I think the dutch barge "transporteur" which is at Harefield used to have one of those. Apparently the engine destroyed itself in a spectacular manner. I was told by someone that was present that it was quite impressive. It was replaced by a Gardner 4LW I think. I like hearing the old semis but I don't think I would like to live with one on balance.

Thing is, an RN would shake the shit out of our boat and sit her low in the water, Foxys Bukh would be nice to listen to, you'd have plenty of time to listen to it! That two pot Bukh would make me go insane! The old BMC is well suited to our boat, it's way less angry that a 4107/8 perky for not much less power. It also doesn't need much in the way if tools (bar for me!!) to look after it or mend it. Pete has a downer on them but most of the Broads hire fleet was powered with them in preference to the Perky - not without good reason

Ah, the black arts of the Diesel Expert - we have an excellent guy locally that when he hangs his overalls up us with old shit are gonna be in the shit!
I'm pulling ours to bits, stripped out the 'box, cauliflower, controls and most of the coolant pipes. Only the electrics to disconnect and label up then ready to lift it onto blocks at the weekend.
I also foolishly sanded the waterline ready for prime and paint if it warns up at the weekend, trying to get a good head start so it's not a rush next spring.

BMC 1.5 / Captain is a nice unit. Older ones with 3 main bearings apparently had a habit of breaking the cranks but still generally good engines if looked after And not allowed to overheat. I did meet a bloke who had a crankshaft failure on a BMC Captain - he kept the broken crankshaft on a bulkhead in his boat - it had sheared right across beside the centre main bearing. Ouch.

Must admit I have a soft spot for the old BMC 2.2 and 2.5 diesels. trouble always was that people used to push them hard and they didn't like that. keep the revs down and never let them overheat and they were good old workhorses

Funny how we keep useless scrap - I kept a bucket of gearbox parts, a piston and various other bits to appease the sidecar gods. I've got a riffle casing I picked up on the Epynt ranges, Pete probably left it up there for me to find on the solo, very nearly cost me a class win that. This was well before I had seen Burt Munro and his offerigs to the God of speed Cooling wise we are blessed with a well sized heat exchanger and an endless supply (unless the intake gets blocked...) Of lovely cool water to keep the old girl happy.

Burt Munro, what a brilliant guy, I have a DVD of the movie : "The Worlds Fastest Indian" www.imdb.com/title/tt0412080/ with Anthony Hopkins in what I think his best roll ever, playing Burt Munro, I watch that DVD at least once a year, and always enjoy it, as much as the first time.

Yes, it's a brilliant film, I haven't seen it in a while though. My religiously viewed film used to be Bruce Brown's epic On Any Sunday the weekend before I would do the Welsh Two Day Enduro - not seen that for a while either
