I was born in 1956.
I suspect I am too old to have been involved in the 'franchise' style of toys.
The most corporate style of toy/present I can recall is a proper football ( a casey). I can't recall anyone even having a particular teams strip to be honest, but maybe that was more indicative of the financial circumstances of the area, than based on availability.
There is no way ANY of the lads on our street would have been seen with a doll, even if it was called Action Man.

Thinking about this I suspect that the latter of your two points (dismissive of help) may be due to the condescending nature of that help. "Don't worry your little head, I'm an expert in these things so I'll sort you out" appears to have been the general tone of the majority of the 'advisors' over on CW. On top of that they have the omnipresent MTB constantly adding his inane, condescending and self-aggrandizing posts.

They're still dolls.

The Armoured car was also indestructable as the base of my Scorpian tank, the Turret was a snapable though. One of my Action men had terrible injuries once caused by a flag stone falling on him....serves him right for being a ruskie spy

This is my then 8 year old. He loves knex he built this on his own. I started buying my son Thomas the Tank Engine stuff when he was about four or five years old. He would build some intricate rail configurations, much like your lad is doing in the photo. I thought it was amazing the amount of concentration and effort he would put into his layouts. It's pretty impressive when kids that age display rather uncanny engineering skills by visualizing and conceptualizing their designs.

I looked at getting a one more and have found there slightly different. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough. We were lucky a colleague said they were clearing out their loft and found some bits our kids might like. It had not even been opened all the bits were still sealed. We got some of those boxes you put partitions in for screws and have it all nice so he can see what he has to use.

I'm very mixed about all this christmas present thing and the "toy invasion'. I feel it brings the kids up to believe in the ultra-capitalist / consumerist "buy more shit or we are all fucked" attitude which seems to be so pervasive in modern society (maaan)
On the other hand they do need things to play with.
No I don't smoke.

Rog I was trying to think of any Franchise stuff that I had and can only think of Dinky toys, things like 007's DB5 and a Man from Uncle car, later on a I a 'Space 1999' eagle and a 'UFO' Interceptor and Mobile....oh,,,,and of course Thunderbirds Dinky toys

I was given things like soft toys made by organic African children from fully biodegradable biodynamically grown cotton picked by western based eco worriers during their gap years.
None of this plastic franchise shit.
I seem to a remember a "sit around and do fuckall" doll as well. Not a lot of action.

Interestingly both ours have asked for books this year as well as rubbish, The eldest has asked for a sewing kit! and k'nex. So we set aside a budget and they get a decent mix. They get bu**er all the rest of the year.

Hah! You fell into my trap! Only another 62 to go... if you have the time keep going, it is one of the oddest threads on Canalworld. If she could produce books she'd be funnier than Bill Bryson.
