Gosh I had a very sheltered childhood...I don't think my brother ever made stuff like that..I first saw an 'onion' gun couple years ago..I was quite impressed. Mum and dad used to buy us dolls and teddy bears...all identical...my brother had dinky cars, mechanno, and toy guns. I guess we just roamed, I remember wading in streams, catching fish and climbing trees and playing down old air raid shelters

All that explosive stuff is very tame in my opinion π. We used to make bombs that would bend metal and small cannons that would fire cast lead shells from a certain weed killer and sugar. Initially we used Jetex fuse wire to ignite the stuff but later, for underwater or remote explosions we perfected electrical detonation from a battery and a wire leading to the bomb. Roger

Roger If you feed the Jetex down a thin flexible plastic pipe from a float on the surface you find it still works ....... unfortunately once it enters the pipe it becomes an instantaneous fuse

small boys chemistry sets are another way of getting rid of your offspring ...... the instructions were very clear about making the hydrogen, they were also correct in saying that it burned ....... however they omitted to mention that you should have a water trap in the vent from the flask before checking with a lighted match actually when I think back on it ...... it's a wonder any of us survived !!! Darwin rules ok !!!

Roger Nowadays, they would have armed response units, helicopters, armored vehicles, bomb squads, hostage negotiators, sky tv crews and christ knows what on the scene within minutes. And you would probably end up getting waterboarded with some electrodes clipped on to your genitals.

some of us nearly didn't. cousin aged 15 decided soaking cotton wool in weed killer and then drying it was fun - he used to throw bits in the open fire when no-one was looking to surprise them with the splutter. One day he was standing by the fire when the heat caused the stuff to ignite in his trouser pocket. He suffered dreadful burns in his groin, he was lucky to retain his reproductive talents but has had a severe limp ever since (60 years).

One day he was standing by the fire when the heat caused the stuff to ignite in his trouser pocket. He suffered dreadful burns in his groin, he was lucky to retain his reproductive talents but has had a severe limp ever since (60 years). We moved on from the weedkiller fairly quickly ....... I remember reading an article in a readers digest (of all places) when in the waiting room at the doctors for some childhood ailment or another, an article about amateur rocketry in the USA. Incredibly it gave the basic ingredients for a solid fuel propellant. This valuable piece of information was surreptitiously torn from the magazine and secreted in a pocket. Considerable experimentation with my pals was needed to get the correct proportions but eventually a small steel case with a hole in the base was fixed to KeilKraft glider ........ the experiment was spectacular, a fully 6' jet of green flame, a very loud whistling noise and a brilliant take off ....... after that it all went a bit pear shaped ........ the wing came detached from the glider and the fuselage and motor ended up as a pile of burning wreckage which ignited a not inconsiderable area of hay in a nearby farmer's field ....... we made ourselves scarce ..... rapidly.

Me too, I told my husband that if he turned up to our wedding in a suit then it wouldn't go ahead. Men in suits are always best avoided!

Β With caps in them?Β There also used to be plastic rockets with a nib on a spring - you put a cap in and throw the rocket up and it lands on the nib making the cap go bang.Β One of my favourite things (still is) is cutting open fireworks, different sorts, and mixing the gunpowder together and putting it in a paper bag; then you make a trail of gunpowder as a (long!!) fuse. The POOF! we called a 'genie'. You can't get proper dangerous fireworks any more, virtually all of these are illegal nowadays... Gun cotton is very easy to make....with stuff available on ebay and a t shirt..:-)
