I agree it depends on the use the boat is being put too. Also the type of engine, I prefere the slower reving, Lower compression engines, so I don't need as much horse power. I suppose I'm tight as well I just don't like spending all that money on fuel, so economy is an important factor for me.

I believe Sabina originally had a Widdop so possibly either a 30Hp single or a 60Hp twin. it was at some later date (possibly 60's when she was renovated and used on a coastal route) she was fitted with a Gleniffer DC4 4 cyl. I was offered a brand new Daewoo 160 HP at a price I couldn't refuse (the only reason I have that much power ....most of which cannot be used because of the small prop)

Then my boat had a 2lw after the widdop. Incidentally the only Shortboat with a widdop in iis at Elsmere port Beacup. Unfortunately it's a none runner.

Lovely. I'd love an old engine but the boat I chose to buy to accommodate my family has a very small engine bay under the wheelhouse so I had to get a small package modern engine to replace the broken one. A long stroke engine like a Gardner 4 would have been too tall to go in there. Its annoying not having a proper engine room but the payoff is a low wheelhouse with plenty of internal eadroom and a lot of internal accomodation in the cabin right up to the engine bay bulkhead. All on a fairly small boat (57ftx12ft). I would have happily had a Gardner 5LW in here but it just wouldn't fit...

There's a nice Thames launch tug called Varlet (about 40x10ft) which has the original Widdop 2cyl unit in there. Obviously capable of pulling a train of lighters. So it must be 60 big horses

Thanks Kris, it's good to finally see a photo again of one of these lovely Leeds & Liverpool Shortboats, it's only too bad that there are so few left.
Peter.
