The Nile, mainly because I have always been fascinated with the source and history.

Grand Union. It breathes history wherever you look. I love it.

1. Huddersfield Narrow - tiny, hardly anyone else on it, secretive, excitement of Standedge Tunnel.
2. Llangollen - dead quiet in Winter, spectacular trees, countryside views, cosy Ellesmere & Chirk.
3. Southern Oxford - countryside, Banbury for shopping.
4. Rochdale - Pennine scenery, nice local people, Hebden Bridge cinema.
5. Stratford - narrow locks, Brearley Aqueduct.

I liked the Montgomery canal, simply because it was so quiet and secluded but the highlight of owning my boat would have to be the day I did the tidal Thames from Limehouse to Teddington with my boy.

I like waterways that are in the rural countryside where willows gently wave in the breeze, where wildlife relax and theres no dog poo bushes or evidence of mad cyclists and mans fly tip mentality...there are small pockets here n there unspoilt.. Abroad .i love the Norweigan fjords..not the busy ones but the bits where the tiny villages are. I like bits of the St Lawrence in Canada and places where you feel your the first person there..though you know your not.

My favourite river is The Wissey in the Fens, It's a bit challenging in places when your bows are on the apex of one bend as your stern is on the apex of the last. Amusing when you meet a GRP coming the other way, didn't even know you could get a boat to climb the bank. Phil

I always find it impossible to say.
Some are lovely because of the feeling of isolation (Shroppie, Ashby).
Some are terrific because of their variety (Grand Union, T &M).
Some are fairly unique (Leeds and Liverpool, K&A).
They all have qualities. It seems like asking "Which of your children is your favourite".

We loved spending the winter there. 3. We had a mooring in Banbury for 18 months. 4. ... and the beach. www.gaddingsdam.org5. Haven't been on there either. I love aquaducts. One of my favourites is the caldon/cauldon. No tv and no phone signal. Bliss.

The Basingstoke really is unique. It has problems with water shortages, so you have to book in advance to use the lock flights, which is a bit of a pain, but it really is worth it, especially the summit level in Hampshire. It has a bit of everything. There are 28 locks in 15 miles in Surrey, then just one lock in 15 miles in Hampshire.

I've done a few of the northern canals, they all have their points, including the old industrial bits. The Rochdale has a certain grandeur though.
