Perhaps it would be wise to buy shares in marinas, as it does seem to be guaranteed income. The canals are certainly the home to lots of floating money. So, from where will 650 boats come from, to fill up that marina? Is the population of England growing so much that people cannot afford land-based houses and are spilling into boats, which are, after all, destined to become rusty skips. Marinas, eh? All that waste coming out of the kitchen sink, and all the dirty shower water... nothing quite like wallowing in it. Cholera, anyone? I'm not sure where the figure of 650 boats comes from in the earlier posts in this thread, the figure I saw in the blog I linked to says 200 - which fits in better with the plans/drawings also linked to. But it's still a good few boats. It's a very long time since we boated down that area but I don't recall it being that busy in the area.....and ISTR that Barby Moorings which is not far a way took a long time to fill, if indeed it ever did. I stayed at Barby for my last year of boating and it did pretty much fill.

Barby looked full as I passed by yesterday. 650 berths was the figure published in Towpath Talk and other similar outlets. I'm off to google now......I may be some time Rog ETA It was Matty40s I passed by yesterday. Sorry, I was confused (age thing I assume) I thought Matty40s off CWDF was boatman on here. But I was wrong......not for the first time I can tell you

I can definitely state that the season has started on the Llangollen, in the basin this morning were 4 boats, there are now 15 and more on the towpath I couldn't be bothered to count.
I feel for the boat that left around 11, must have had a nightmare with the oncoming boats.

Season Defiantly started, we got passed by numerous ducks today, or some people that rhyme.
I can finally start using my favourite phrases again...
'Av you come on 'oliday by mistake?'
'First time out mate?'
'Wot the fuck are you bloody doing you twat?'
Ok maybe I am too nice to use the last one but I bet I do at some point during the 'season'

Apart from the pinch point, the best way to do the Llangollen is against the flow of boats, as every hire boat in the north-west of England gets there midweek and so by going on the opposite cycle you save having to queue for hours at the locks.

I suppose more people do cruise in the Summer than the Winter, simply because some folk (like me) still need to earn money to pay for the licences and shit and it makes more sense to work in the Winter and cruise in the Summer when the days are longer. If anyone can fix me up with a rich widow who's prepared to bankroll me then I'll gladly give up my mooring and go cruising all year.

In our case winter is a ball ache, short days along with a big dog a small child and a sometimes irritable wife means it's not worth the unequal struggle - that's before you factor in my paranoia about leaving stuff undrained and suffering frost damage. We are not short of heating with a 4kw Wallas, Webasto TTC and a heater matrix that can be heated by the engine, none of which are enough to convince SWMBO to do anything much after bonfire night. I miss out on some magic weekends but do get the odd day out from time to time.

I do the same, go for the odd day or two's cruising over the Winter but obviously that's on a section of canal that I've covered dozens of times, and I far more enjoy going to some faraway place that I've never been to before. I'm setting off on Saturday to do the North Pennine Ring, and I just can't wait.
