"The Scottish first minister said the move was needed to protect Scottish interests in the wake of the UK voting to leave the EU." What? The haggis and whisky industry? "Prime Minister Theresa May has so far avoided saying whether or not she would grant permission." What's this got to do with that woman whose husband is a tax-avoider and traitor to the UK? I say let the Scots have another vote if they want to. Trouble is, 20% up there are English who have moved there. Have they 'integrated'? Perhaps the real way to go is for there to be a genetics testing - all those who have Scottish/Celtic genes get to vote, the 'English & others' may not vote. I see nothing wrong with an independent Scotland, in fact I should welcome it - let them show what they can do:

"The Scottish first minister said the move was needed to protect Scottish interests in the wake of the UK voting to leave the EU." The Scottish first minister knows she has NO chance of winning a referendum on Independence after we've left the EU!

I'm a little torn on this issue. On the one hand I quite like the idea of an independent Scotland in the EU giving me an opportunity to obtain an EU passport along side my nice new navy blue British passport. On the other hand I am at heart a supporter of the union. But overall I think it about time the UK government stuck a stake in the heart of the SNP by putting an end to Scottish Independence once and for all. It would be very simple to do. All that is needed is for the UK to state that if either the Orkney, Shetland and Western Isles vote to remain part of the UK then we will allow them to do so. That at a stroke would skewer the SNP once and for all.

I have just come back from Scotland, My friend David has a customer who is a SNP Councillor who works for a SNP MSP. David and him had a blazing row over this very issue David pointed at me and said "why should he have to pay for Scotlands free give a ways, free prescriptions, free uni etc etc" He also asked where the tax offices were, DVLA and all the other stuff needed to run a country and who was going to pay for it? As a last thing he said why should he pay more tax in Scotland than they do in England then answered "its for fish faces pipe dreams" He then threw him out of the garage and told him to take his custom elsewhere! That was good for customer relations I said he said arses like him are two a penny made me smile

Bad tactics, from both Nicola's and Theresa's point of view, IMO. Even with Indyref2 within 2 years of Sec 50 being signed, there's no way Scotland could be independent before Brexit implementation. Therefore, an independent Scotland would be a country wishing to join the EU, not a member wishing to stay, even before the EU have their say during Brexit negotiations. Nicola's strategy would be better if she waited until the dust from Brexit had settled. If an Indyref2 held in, say, 2024, resulted in a "Yes" vote (assuming question was same or similar!) then the EU would be likely to look favorably on an independent Scotland joining. (They're not averse to new countries joining, just bits of them leaving, while other bits remain.) (Assuming re-joining seems like a good idea!) Theresa's best strategy, IMO, is "Bring it on", have Indyref2 asap, before any result from Brexit negotiations, and this year, if it can be managed. Either way, a "No" Indyref2 would be the last for a long time. Theresa is more likely to get that result sooner than later, and Nicola needs more time to build support and make a strong case, which will be easier after Brexit, as there will doubtless be a fair bit which can be blamed on leaving the EU. Or there's always another way to get support

The last referendum was supposed to be a 'once in a generation poll'.
I don't think the politicians are interested in independence, but rather in applying pressure to get the things they really want.

The last referendum was supposed to be a 'once in a generation poll'. I don't think the politicians are interested in independence, but rather in applying pressure to get the things they really want. Rog Although Nicola does want to use any means to get one over on Theresa, unfortunately the SNP are very much interested in independence - for the sake of it, and at any cost to the electorate and the wellbeing of the country. Well independence from England of course, not from Brussels. It is anti-English racism pure and simple. Which annoys me because the majority don't want independence and don't want another referendum. What the Greens think they are up to I've no idea. They are trading the future of the country for a few windmills. If I ever had any time for them, that has long gone.
