Perhaps, if it's in a suitable place, something that utilises the coupling bolts? Could separate the coupling and bolt a pulley in the gap. That's an option worth looking at. I've now found a Perm 132 motor about 4.5hp at 36 volts which will work as peterboat suggested so it looks like hybrid is more likely than the minn kota pods. Therfore looking at a motor driving the shaft rather than the shaft driving an alternator

Hmmm. The prop shaft won't be expecting the lateral force needed by anything other than the gearbox driving it to get a grip?
