I guess its the same with plant machinery but I don't know.

Volkswagen seem to have sorted it on their marine engines but maybe only on the bigger ones?

I have a 110a alternator and it took me a while to learn how to stop shredding belts, what seems to help is to allow the belt to warm up charging the starter battery before activating the split charge relay and charging the invariably much more discharged leisure batteries.
