Incidentally, if it's any help to anyone in the future, this was done for me by a fellow boater on my mooring, Ken. I said to him that it was considered unlikely that he would be able to remove the nuts without shearing the studs off and he said "Fucking bollocks, I've done hundreds of these and I've never broken a stud off yet". We took the stove door to his garage and he used an oxy-acetylene torch to heat the nuts until they were red-hot and they came off with a set of waterpump grips straight away without any problems. Only took about 10 minutes so I imagine a friendly mechanic would be happy to do it for a blue beer voucher.
