You could send an e-mail to the school and ask:
"Staff at De Lisle College in Loughborough have said they still haven't given up hope that Madeleine, now 14, will one day return and take up her place."
I wonder who is paying for her place... Maddie's parents? It's either a senseless waste or a lie.

It's probably more a symbolic gesture from the school staff, rather than some formal arrangement whereby a desk stands conspicuously empty in the middle of a classroom with "Madelaine McCann" written on it and tuition fees are paid. I suppose some people feel sympathy for her parents, and I certainly do. They may have made a mistake but it's something that no reasonable person could ever have predicted would end in murder. The mother of James Bulger doesn't attract any of this opprobrium even though her actions boil down to being pretty much the same.

I'm not convinced it's the same thing. maddies parents made a cold and calculated decision to leave her alone in an insecure property whilst they went partying James bulger was led away after his mum was distracted.

They will never be the same. one left a young child after making the decision to do so. The other took their eye of their child for a few seconds. neither child should of suffered.
