Been there done that and failed. Tried to find a small inverter to run our LEC larder fridge so we didn't have to leave the main 1kw inverter on except when needed. The old fridge wiring is still there in 10mm and despite trying several cheap inverters none would start the fridge reliability especially if power had been off and the compressor was stalled. Got up to a 1kw inverter with the surge protection turned off and it still sometimes failed to start. Result is that we leave main 1kw inverter in standby mode and it runs the fridge just fine. However it does sometimes beep showing just how much surge there is on the fridge. One thing I will say is that most modern inverters are high frequency these are not good at dealing with surges above the rating. Low frequency inverters (big and heavy) are much better at handling overload/surge.
