I ask you again but will spell it out really slowly this time. 'w h i c h o r d i n a r y w o r k e r i s g u r a n t e e d a n a n n u a l p a y r i s e b a s e d o n a t r i p l e l o c k' Because pensions are still well below average wages and because the Tories will massage the inflation figures and deliberately keep average wages low. Therefor removing the 3rd way, will, result in what amounts to a cut in pension buying power. There are lots of people who have a graded pay scale that increases year on year. Perhaps when pensioners are 'on a level playing field' then it might be revisited. However at the moment that isn't the case and the 3rd safeguard, although an arbitrary figure. Guarantees pensions will increase by at least that much. Why not do away with old age pension altogether? If you can't afford to support yourself when you stop working then it's just too bad. Are there no prisons, are there no workhouses? You cant beat a good conspiracy theory.

Take an average working week of 40 hours that's £288. Single person pension is £128. Is it a conspiracy theory to see, quite clearly, that there is a pay gap here of £160pw? Even at 2.5% pa it's going to take 50 years for the pension to catch up. If average earnings go up by even 0.05%pa pensions will never catch up. Maybe you don't need yours, and most of mine will go in tax when I eventually get it, but that doesn't mean I support it being taken away from people who do need it. It isn't an advantage, it isn't even a safeguard. It's a guarantee that pensions will at least try to redress the balance. You know? the 'level playing field' Tories are always banging on about.

Not sure what all of that has to do with the tories manipulating the inflation figure.

Sorry, I'm stunned by that.
Are you saying that pensioners must be paid the same rate as someone WORKING for 40 hours at minimum wage rates?

Rog Oh so having worked for 40 hours a week for 45 years paying into a pot that was supposed to support you in your old age, means living on beans on toast for the last 30 years of your life does it? What do you think they should get then? Less than the minimum wage obviously

Well don't forget that one advantage of being retired is no National Insurance deductions, and no paying to travel to work every day. Ok 2. And no need to save for retirement (3- feeling a MP sketch coming on). You can definitely have the same lifestyle when retired, for a lot less gross income than when you're working.

And in lots (though yes not all) of cases no dependent children to care and pay for. Obviously in some cases this wont be relevant because some people have never had any kids but things like holidays are now a lot cheaper as is our food and utilities bill.

The trouble is Martin that some people expect that you can mix the magic fairy dust with the magic water and the money just makes itself!!
