Good idea about the cola. I'll try that! I can empty the bowl completely by not closing the lid as its a Lavac. then pour a couple of litres of tesco finest cola in. Worth a go. I also think the hydrochloric might be the wrong thing for a toilet with a holding tank. Give the coke overnight at least. Hydrochloric attacks everything, not just the limescale! OK with glazed porcelain but that's about it... I've used spirits of salt for cleaning small metal items in the past. Its very aggressive thats for sure !! Nasty fumes from it as well.

I see magnetman has been very active and I went to have a look at the posts count. I was surprised I'm still ahead.

Like John stated earlier.....white vinegar
Copied & Pasted from Mrs Google......Pour some vinegar into the bowl, leaving it there for a few hours before you start the cleaning process. Then scrub the stain with more vinegar, and flush the toilet to rinse. Repeat the process until you can't spot the stain anymore and your toilet bowl is shining again.
A friend swears by using a steam cleaner.
He said it came off in big chips.

Lavac's always used to be supplied with the Henderson MK-V diaphram pumps, did that change ?
for the descaling without messing up the bactria situation, if everything else fails, give it a go with a needle hammer, that will get rid of any scaling and most likely of your lovely toilet bowl at the same time, you can't win them all, can you ?
Peter.
I think its a Henderson pump but it says Lavac so not entirely sure its identical which is why I said more or less the same. I assume its the same thing but rebranded. But, Assumption is the mother of all "awkward situations" as they say. Interesting idea about using a needle gun for the cleaning - do you think a rotating blaster would do it?
I expect a pressure washer would be effective but might make a bit of a mess. I'm sure that your scaling wouldn't stand a chance of hanging on if I showed it my Tercoo blaster (Magic piece of kit !), I would try that myself, only because I have one already and know what they can do, the needle-gun I would have to rent, so that would make it a much more expensive way of trying.
Also in the calculations of cost for the job, it would be good to check the price of a new toilet bowl, if it's the bigger model, you'll have a problem, as they're not made anymore.
Those Lavac toilets are the best marine toilets, there are no moving parts at all, so really nothing to go wrong apart from normally easy enough to unblock blockings.
The problem that people sometimes have with one of these is when visiters use the loo, and want to check too early, before the vacuum has gone, to open the lid, which will pull the rubber seals of the lid and cover.
With all the good advises you've had, I'm (almost) sure you'll be looking into a spotlessly clean toilet bowl by now, if that's not the case yet, you'd better start doing something about it.
Peter.

I asked the woman if it bothered her she said no so I don't really need to go to Speedy and hire the needle gun yet. I'm not sure but I think its the small one. It has done excellent service as a full time domestic bog for 3 or 4 people (2 adults 2 kids). Faultless and reliable unit I'm really pleased with it. If I have visitors I tell them there is no toilet. Its terrible living on a boat

I'm not that bothered about it but if it was upsetting the woman then I would sort it. I assumed she would be annoyed by it but apparently she isn't.

I'm no expert but this does seem a bad idea to me. Might be ok if all fittings/tank are plastic and/or you gave the system a good flush out afterwards. How big is the tank and how often does it need emptying? I could go for a swim in mine and if it gets a bit smelly a dead sheep gets added so I'm trying to scale my thoughts down a bit. All fittings and tank are plastic. Its a tiny tank only 100 litres (deliberate strategy as pumpout is included with the mooring and when boat leaves mooring it is back to the sht suitcase). Pumped about every 3 or 4 days so there is good turnover. If you pump out every 3-4 days why are you worried about the good bacteria? Like a cassette, surely the stuff isnt in there long enough for the bacteria to get work. Just go ahead and use a decent commercial bowl cleaner like Harpic, works in minutes rather than hours and no hard scrubbing.

That's a good point. No idea how long it takes to get the bacteria working but it could well be irrelevant in my particular situation.
I've never used any chemicals but this may be a bit anorakish on my part.
