Sometimes in certain places on some canals where there is not flow it feels like the boat is going uphill.
Obviously it isn't or the water would be flowing.
Does anyone else experience this and have an explanation for it?

I know what you mean.
I've always assumed it's a perspective thing with the banksides closing inwards towards the vanishing point, and of course only occurring on long straights.
That is of course, unless you're in a lock.
Then you're probably going uphill.

I remember starting a thread about this in 'the other place''. However it was relating to places on the cut where it looked like I was going downhill (well probably am anyway..).
There is a stretch between Braunston and Napton for example which looks downhill. It's all about land contour really.
Sometimes the same effect can make you think your boat is listing to one side (shit, maybe it is!...maybe I need to stand in the middle...).

as for the op, Is the boat trying to climb its own bow wave? Slow down. And of course a long pound isn't flat, it's curving down in front of you, not going uphill. (awaits pedant from Flat Earth Society)

(awaits pedant from Flat Earth Society) Going very slow actually. There was a bit of weed in prop so a quick chuck back sorted it but it got me thinking as there are places where geographically it appears one is ascending or descending.

There is an old Irish blessing (ignore the god stuff...) May The Road Rise Up To Meet You May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
And a song; Ignoring 'the God stuff' would be like ignoring my human dad who had his 'good' moments...

Whenever I descend a staircase lock I always get a slightly uneasy feeling that my boat is going to fall out of the lock I'm in into the next one.

Ignoring 'the God stuff' would be like ignoring my human dad who had his 'good' moments... Sorry, I just didn't want to get bogged down in a religious debate. I have a feeling that the Irish blessing has it's roots in the phenomenon that is the subject of the Op. I may be talking (C)rap though - see left hand side of first image in video. You brought up the 'God' bit! Why?

There are some roads like that where u think you are going up and you are really going down.. There's a tourist attraction in the province where I'm from called Magnetic Hill. When I was a child, you'd pay 1$ to experience it. The "experience" was: stop your car at what looked like the bottom of a gentle grade, put your car in neutral (with the engine running) remove your foot from the brake and low and behold your car would start to climb the incline towards the large brightly painted sculpture of a magnet at the top of the "hill" For us kids it was great, the adults "got it" - I remember how disapointed I was when I found out it was all an opital illusion:(
