Had the wife's oldest daughter and her family over today and grandson finally got to use the rod and reel we bought him for Christmas. Fishing in one of the cuts on the marina that only has boats one side I put a load of hemp seed down this morning to pre-bait and we float fished this afternoon on maggot. We had a good haul of lovely Rudd, although I did make sure I fished the end that I knew the bigger ones were in😉 Over the course of the afternoon we had about 40 fish, all barring a couple were Rudd, with the best ones up to 1 1/2 lb. Brandon ( the grandson) loved it so I think he'll be into it now. Both his dad and sister also caught so everyone was happy, and I do love a bit of float fishing using a centrepin for that immediate contact with the fish. All in all a lovely afternoon.

Sounds good! 1 1/2 lb is 1/2 bigger than my best in more than 40 years fishing. I've only ever caught 1 rudd in years of fishing the local canals. I'm on the Shroppie where I caught fair numbers of big perch last summer. They are missing this year, but decent roach fishing on hemp.

As this could be the new fishing section i will make my addition Not long been back form Presthaven sands down North Wales, without going into the details of the holiday......nah i wont as it will make me sound a grumpy owd git lol. Ok if it wasnt for a boat called Balmoral MV www.whitefunnel.co.uk/c-9-llandudno.aspxyes i love boats but on that day i didnt a si lost 2hrs fishing And 12 kids trying to drown themselvs off the Greta Orme And a prats son costing me £4 in parking so not keen on spending another £4 on another four hours. I made a PB aswell as that i had a small Pout and four Mackerel with LSD of Llandudno pier. supper On the BBQ, cant beat that no way And piece de resistance, my first decent Bull Huss, had a few LSD before this and this was my last due to a certain circumstance with a wazok of a driver in a car park. Great Orme where i fished just around the corner in the pigeon holes. killer to get down and harde to get back up And that ended quicker than i wanted due to spoilt brats trying to drown themselves. I feel the sea fishing bug coming back after a 10 year lay off

Lively little bugger sat times, the Huss took a bit to tame. Good thing about LSD is that if they are biting you guaranteed not to blank lol Me and the grandson had the Mackerel for supper with chips Think i mite do a monthly session from now on, sea fishing that is as FW i can anytime

Used to get dogfish in the pots, a bastard to get out of the cone necked ones. I collected some pots for my mate from Cardigan Bay while I was racing in Wales. He got well into pot fishing just off of Felixstowe, set the pots one weekend, head home and then lift them the following weekend. First couple of weeks was successful then the pots were always empty despite his bouys having his boat name on them. Only conclusion was one of the local fisherman was emptying them during the week. Question was how to stop em. Now being simple lads from Northants we had no old fisherman's superstitions to worry about, turns out rabbits put the shits up the Suffolk fishermen, as luck would have it we shot rabbits during the week for a local farmer meaning we had a plentiful supply of bait for the weekend..... Following the change to rabbit for bait his pots were never pilfered again - I'd loved to have seen the face of the bastard that was robbing them when he discovered the grim remains of Bugs having been underwater for a week feeding Lobsters ⚓🚢💪🍻👍

He was lucky to get them back at all after leaving them down a week. Must have been good ground. Great feeling pulling pots and not knowing what your going to get. I hated pulling congor out. Flicking them out of the pot was a bloody art form. I did get caught a couple of times. My favourite was crawfish. Good money.

There's only a relatively small number of regular commercial fishermen down at Felixstowe ferry, on the whole they were a good bunch well known to my mate who has sort of became accepted into the fold - despite being a landscape gardener and weekend fisherman from Northants

Curious why fishermen are superstitious about rabbits?
Ah! Google is our friend.....
The Rabbit is one of the more confusing superstitions but its appearance or the use of the word on a vessel was deemed, almost universally, to be unlucky. It was difficult to find a definitive reason why the rabbit is considered so unlucky but one explanation I’ve found is that “there is nothing easier to bewitch than a boat” and a witch can easily assume the form of a rabbit (as well as other “unlucky” creatures such as pigs, hares or foxes).
A fisherman will use the terms “lang ears” or “mappies” rather than mention the word rabbit. The word "rabbit" uttered aloud would result in the anecdote "caul' iron" being said in reply by a superstitious fisherman.
I wonder what a superstitious fisherman would think of receiving a “lucky” rabbit’s foot as a gift?

During the late 70's, and throughout the 80's, inshore fishing was virtually fished to extinction. The French and Portuguese swamped a lot of the South and West waterways, along with Russian factory ships mooring just off shore buying up the catches. It left us having to steam further out to unknown territory and deeper water, which increased the chances of losing gear. What had been a day job turned into staying out overnight. RAF nimrods and fisheries vessels were forever chasing off the French boats who increasingly crept closer to our shores. Yet when we fished further afield in their waters, they played all hell cutting our gear etc. Fishing near the bay of biscay had a mad Portuguese twat taking pot shots at us with a shotgun! Crazy days. Funny looking back though.
