Reading the forum lately and musing...
Debates usually have 2 sides (can be more), but the aim is to win. It is adversarial in nature.
Discussions usually have no side, and the aim is looking for a common truth, or to understand the issue being discussed better. It is exploratory and cooperative in nature.
Is turning a discussion into a debate (as understood above) done deliberately to stifle the discussion?

I think that frequently it is. There are some who just have to score points (don't get me wrong, I'll argue my corner really hard but I hope I do take note of other views)

Either way, I think it tends to goes wrong when someone joins in but has no interest in having their views challenged and just uses it as a soap box, or a way to boost ones ego. Bullying seems a an effective way to stifle discussion or debate. As is using threatening comments and resorting to over elaborate language in an attempt to bamboozle other contributors. In fact that just about sums up our legal system.

I'd rather the full half hour if you don't mind.

Is turning a discussion into a debate (as understood above) done deliberately to stifle the discussion? To answer your question... Yes. Debates are ok but rarely change opinion. Discussion often changes opinion.

It is possible to debate, allowing everyone the opportunity to have their say, without necessarily having the final vote, but I accept that that is actually a discussion.
In my view on this forum, we generally all have opinions which can be pretty well fixed, but it remains interesting to view others opinions, whether I agree or not.
What I do not like is the petty name calling, but maybe I'm a delicate flower.
I may strongly disagree with your point of view, but I defend your right to express it (as Voltaire never said)

To think of all the shit I've endured at the hands of you and Stumpy over the last season. Humph!! Still, 2017/18 is a new sheet with new recruits, things can't get any worse can they? (Quietly puts to one side the memory of relegation to ND1.....) ππ»βπ’π

I think if you look back, neither Stumpy or I have needed to resort to petty name calling......the Saints performances (with maybe two exceptions) have done our talking for us Mind you Baaaarth didn't exactly cover themselves with glory. Hope you'll be willing the boys on in the morning. I know it's an impossible dream, but...... Rog

Rog That's true, sort of along the lines of don't try to make me look like an idiot, I can do it fine all by myself.... Re Gats, He's either going to be hailed as a genius for sticking by the 23 that got by SBW and some shoddy kicking from Barrett or an idiot for not shuffling the pack. Special mention goes to Alun (shirt blocker) Wynn Jones on his 9th consecutive lion's cap. Have a belter, the Grey brothers send their regards.......

Whichever way it goes, I think Gatland has been 'found out'.
Have you replaced Picamoles yet?
