When you're out and about do you pick canalside fruit? I have some fruit trees I know about in our regular haunts, a pear tree near stanley ferry, often find apple trees overhanging the cut, plum trees on the Weaver and blackberries everywhere. It's time to stock the cupboard with tins of custard and evaporated milk.

Fruit is sloes from Oakley Purleius up the back of home.
Blackberries from Titchmarsh nature reserve.
Apples from me mate who's got a garden overrun with the bloody things!
Odd pear from the tree in the beer garden of the Black Horse in Nassington.
Occasional haul of onions and carrots when on the Levels or out Bedford way.

My son just picked (up) a kg of cherries for 40p and 1.2kg of strawberries for 45p from...Tesco. 2 pots of whipping cream 8p each. A quid well spent.

Mind you, even though I wash our pickin's before cooking with them, I make sure to only pick fruit above shoulder higth...never mind the dog wee, I've seen fishermen weeing in the hedge rows as well

There's blackberries everywhere in the North Oxford although the first week in September is the prime hunting period for them.

Had they the brains to drive 400 yards up the road and go down a track to the nature reserve they could have picked some not covered in road grime and nasty diesel soot 🙄

Interesting fact of the day: The blackberry bush is the worlds largest carnivorous plant. Are you using the word "carnivorous" to mean "meat-eating"? Because if so I would have to respectfully disagree with you. Venus fly traps eat more meat than blackberries.

He was always, always being picked on by the particulary obnoxious manager. The car park round the back was surrounded by blackberries and Les (the manager) would come in each day and fill a Tupperware box. Sooooo John the trainee came in early one morning and gave the best fruit a good hosing down and then we all retired to a vantage point and waited. Sure enough Les arrived and proceeded to pick the fruit, popping one in his mouth from time to time while exclaiming " Mmm, still with the dew on them" Phil
